Here it is, at last: the latest remastered trek episode, broadcast last week on CBS: Season Two's "The Apple"!

*******************************

This time just a rather short "blurb" from me.

THE ENHANCEMENTS

Again, a new planet, again somewhat Earth-like (at it should be, considering the Eden-like vegetation), but with some reddish colors to match the red sky down on the planetside (which remained untouched). Other than that, just a few orbital views of the Enterprise and new phaser colors (blue instead of red) for the attack on Vaal later in the episode.

ASSORTED COMMENTS

This is arguable the weakest of the Kirk-destroys-a-computer-to-free-the-people stories; his actions may very well be considered as breaking the Prime Directive, but Kirk never had any sympathies for computers running whole planets, so her might argue that a natural development of the native people wasn't possible as long as Vaal was in control. The weakness in this stories lies in the fact that Kirk and company never considered to try to communicate with Vaal to find out if it could be convinced to let the people live on their own. On the plus side, the episode contains many fine character interactions and some more or less funny situations between the landing party and the "children" of Vaal.
Heavy losses of "red shirts" make this episode memorable; you don't want to work on a starship serving as a red shirt after watching this mission! At least Kirk shows deep felt regret after losing his men and some doubt about his decision to beam down on this seemingly peaceful planet! But, as Kirk has said before, "risk is our business" - but in most cases, the risk lies mostly on the red shirt's side!

Okay, then, that's all for today, except to remind you to keep seeding after download, or I will order you to wear a red shirt for a while and work as security on a few first contact missions! :-(

Next week: "By Any Other Name". In the original we saw a re-use of the galactic barrier from "Where No Man Has Gone Before"; let's hope CBS doesn't copy their new version from same remastered episode, but give us some fresh views of the barrier! Other than that, we saw a not very spectacular picture of the Andromeda galaxy in the original. Maybe that shot will be enhanced somehow.
Furthermore, there will be a new planet in the first part of the episode.

All right, people, take care, and

LIVE LONG AND PROSPER!!!

Best regards,
Captain Soundtrekker
