As announced, here is my version of Star Trek\'s \"The Enterprise Incident\", the tv rip from the remastered episode shown on CBS last month. It is somewhat better in quality than the version uploaded last week here on thepiratebay. It\'s your choice!

THE ENHANCEMENTS
Some nice work here with the enhanced version of the Romulan D7 battlecruiser which are identical to the Klingon version due to a Klingon/Romulan alliance that includes the exchange of technology. The Romulan version gets an additional painting job much like the Bird of Prey (unlike the original, which hadn\'t that feature), and instead of three D7\'s we get only two digital ones, accompanied by a Bird of Prey - a nice touch to get a little variety (one can argue though that this would be a break of canon, as we have seen 3 D7\'s in the original, but that could be said of almost EVERY digital effect, as all of them do differ in a more or less subtle way from the original ones!)

ASSORTED COMMENTS

D.C. Fontana, who wrote this episode, was very vocal about some grips she had with the final draft of the script, which had some story elements added: \"There were errors in that episode that I protested against, and I believe David Gerrold\'s THE WORLD OF STAR TREK covers those in a memo I wrote in regards to my protests about it. Overall it was not a bad episode, but I did have a lot of complaints about it and things that weren\'t approached or handled right. It was really based on the Pueblo Incident [the USS Pueblo was an American ship in the Korean war which was being held by the North Koreans as a spy-ship], in the sense that here\'s this ship caught spying and they have to find a justification for their being there. Kirk\'s sanity is put on the line in terms of why they\'re there. Then, of course, they have to get out safely, preferably with the information they came for. Now that\'s not what happened with the Pueblo, but the Pueblo Incident kicked off this line of thinking in my mind.
\"[But] let\'s face it, the romantic scene between the Romulan Commander and Spock was totally out of context. Any Romulan worth her salt would have instantly suspected Spock because they are related races. That was wrong. Kirk\'s attitudes were wrong. A simple thing -- the cloaking device was supposed to be a very small thing, about the size of a watch, for instance, and it could be easily hidden. Here\'s Kirk running around with this thing that looks like a lamp. You know, highly visible. This is stupidity as well as illogical thinking. Visually it was stupid, conceptually it was very bad. There were a lot of things, little things, that were changed, but my biggest objection is the scene between Spock and the woman, because I really did not believe it. And I did not believe that the Romulan did not suspect Spock of something underhanded. She does know enough about Vulcan and Vulcans to know that something\'s afoot.\"

So the original intention of Fontana\'s first draft was apparently a diatribe against the ethics of spying (based loosely on the Pueblo Incident). The idea for this came from David Gerrold, and D.C. Fontana worked it over. Fred Freiberger, the producer, decided that this wasn\'t really a good theme, and changed it to a pro-spying story, with Kirk and Spock as the dashing heroes who steal a deadly weapon for the Federation. In fact, in either case, the logic of the thrust is somewhat misplaced. What we are left with is an action yarn with virutally no moral thrust at all. Spock clearly regrets the deception against the Commander, since he has come to know and admire her, but not the mission as such. Kirk, naturally, in this case simply obeyed orders without question (which he doesn\'t do all the time, as we know by now!).

Okay, then, that\'s all for today, except to remind you to keep seeding after download, or I\'ll decloak for a few weeks, leaving you without any new remastered episodes (yes, I know, dro316 does them also - but mine are better!:-)

Next week:

- \"Obsession\" (to be shown on CBS the following weekend)

All right, people, take care, and
