IcoFx sarebbe in teoria un programma per creare e modificare icone, in realtà si tratta di un vero e proprio editor grafico completo di effetti e strumenti che si trovano solo nei programmi di fotoritocco.

Gratuito e piccolo da scaricare, sta su un dischetto (se ce ne fossero ancora): IcoFx non solo è completo e comodo da usare ma ha anche una interfaccia semplice ed intuitiva che ricorda quella degli editor grafici, anche se nasconde molti più strumenti dedicati espressamente alla creazione e modifica di icone.

Aggiornato spesso, il programma è compatibile con le grosse icone di Windows Vista con trasparenze (e alpha channel), e grazie ai tanti strumenti ed effetti speciali consente persino di trasformare vecchie icone aggiungendo ombre, creandone varie versioni di vari colori, modificandone le dimensioni, aggiungendo sfumature, tinte, scritte e tutto quel che passa per la testa del creatore.

Si può partire da una qualsiasi immagine, importandola nel programma utilizzando i "Processi multipli" (Menu File) il programma può persino creare automaticamente icone dalle immagini, o immagini dalle icone, o estrarre icone dalle risorse con un paio di clic.

Una volta scelta l'immagine su cui lavorare, si può procedere a tagliare e ridimensionare, utilizzando poi uno degli oltre 40 effetti inclusi nel pacchetto, e creare icone fino a 256x256 pixel con trasparenze, ombre sottostanti, il tutto con la possibilità di modificare e personalizzare qualsiasi passaggio, strumento ed azione.

Non mancano classici strumenti di modifica immagini per regolare luminosità e contrasto, per cambiare saturazione e bilanciamento dei colori (consentendo di creare tante icone "simili" di colore differente partendo da un unico modello, ad esempio), uno strumento per la cattura dello schermo e "undo" multipli, per tornare più volte indietro sui propri passi durante il lento parto di un icona.

Una piccola "Gestione risorse" integrata consente di scandagliare dischi e altri supporti per acchiappare e salvare immagini in maniera intuitiva. Dulcis in fundo il programma è disponibile anche in italiano scaricando un piccolo file accessorio e piazzandolo nella cartellina "Languages".
