Houdini Master is the most complete visual effects and animation solution available. This award-winning and production-proven product handles the most challenging shots without the need for additional plug-ins or an army of programmers. Film production facilities can rely on Houdini Master to help them create stunning feature film effects and character animation.
Houdini 10 now includes support for the Open Dynamic Engine Rigid Body solver. Renowned as one of the fastest solvers available, the ODE engine is a great fit with Houdini’s integrated dynamics environment. When lots of rigid body objects are involved, the ODE solver lets you work faster which is important when designing a shot.
Houdini 10 lets you easily create composite ODE objects and the engine supports Houdini’s RBD constraints. The addition of the Open Dynamics Engine in Houdini 10 brings faster simulations to 3D artists working with rigid bodies. Faster simulations mean more iterations for your client which means getting the job finished on time and on budget.
While many people import models into Houdini from other apps, there is a growing trend to take advantage of Houdini’s procedural approach to creating geometry. Based on user feedback, these improvements will increase productivity and allow modellers to do more of their work right inside Houdini.
Some of the new tools include a Knife tool and an Edge loop cut tool. You can now grow and shrink selections and tools like Booleans and Extract have added functionality. These little workflow improvements can make a big difference in production and demonstrate the commitment Side Effects has to helping customers in all areas of the pipeline.
Houdini’s node-based networks are the heart of its procedural approach and with Houdini 10 you will enjoy fewer clicks and a higher level of productivity. The first thing you will notice is the new network editor toolbar which gives you quick access to a number of key UI elements such as nested network boxes, new align tools and sticky notes.
You can also break nodes away from a network by wiggling the mouse and can drop nodes onto connector lines to add them to the network. Houdini artists spend a lot of time in the network editor which makes these usability enhancements critical for reducing clicks. The editor has also been optimized to make large network display much more interactive.
Motion FX is a great new feature that gives artists and animators access to the power of CHOPS. CHOPS otherwise known as channel operators, is one of Houdini’s most powerful features and provides advanced procedural control over everything that moves.
Windows: Tested on Windows XP and Vista (64 bit)
GL-enabled desktops are not currently supported.
2 GB required
2-4 GB+ recommended
4-6 GB+ required for fluid simulations
Multiprocessor systems should be configured with additional RAM
Houdini supports multiprocessor compositing and rendering
Recent generation 32 or 64-bit AMD or Intel processor (requires SSE or higher)
Houdini supports MMX and Streaming SIMD (SSE2) where present
500 MB required for installation
3 Button mouse required
Scroll wheel used where present
Wacom tablet recommended for Houdini's brush-based tools
Workstation-class OpenGL graphics card (such as NVidia and ATI)
Graphic Card drivers: NVidia: 169 or higher, ATI: 8.44 or higher.
Minimum resolution: 1024 x 768; Recommended resolution: 1920 x 1200 (widescreen)
Color depth of 16-bit+ required with 32-bit+ (“true color”) recommended
Requires support for OpenGL 1.2 or later; Takes advantage of OpenGL 2.0 support if available
Hardware-accelerated OpenGL required for optimum performance
Performance may suffer with complex scenes on non-workstation graphics cards and on laptops
Integrated Intel graphic cards are not supported
Houdini does not require support for Direct3D (all viewports and interfaces use OpenGL)X can either work with or take the place of keyframed animation. You can add Motion FX to individual parameters or whole groups of channels. Working procedurally with Motion FX has clear production benefits such as the ability to incorporate changes and to generate multiple iterations for your clients.
