Data & Maps includes approximately 20 GB of elevation and image data spread out over four DVDs. The majority of this data is derived from the NASA/NGA 90-meter Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) dataset. This includes a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), shaded relief, void areas, and water bodies. In addition, many of the raster datasets previously included in Data & Maps, such as the 150-meter resolution Global Imagery, have been carried over to 2008. This document focuses on the SRTM datasets as a whole, and how they are organized onto the four DVDs. For details about an individual dataset, please see the dataset metadata (.xml) file.
The four elevation and image data DVDs are titled:
Elevation and Image Data - World
Global Imagery and Shaded Relief - North and South America
Global Imagery and Shaded Relief - Europe and Africa
Global Imagery and Shaded Relief - Asia and Australia
The Elevation and Image Data – World DVD contains these datasets:
Global Digital Elevation Model (SRTM)
As explained in the previous section, the primary component of this dataset is the 90-meter SRTM elevation data, but it is also supplemented with GTOPO30 data beyond 60 degrees North and 56 degrees South, and in the SRTM void areas. These files exist in the \srtm_void_filled\elevation folder.
Void Areas (SRTM)
This vector dataset represents those areas without elevation values in the SRTM source data (between 60 degrees North to 56 degrees South latitude). These files exist in the \srtm_void_filled\data_quality folder. Please note that there are no files for this dataset in the GTOPO30 tiles.
This vector dataset represents lakes, rivers and ocean areas. The source for the SRTM tiles is NGA, and the main source for the GTOPO30 tiles is the Digital Chart of the World (DCW). These files exist in the \srtm_void_filled\water folder.
Global Elevation Index
This index represents the geographic extent of the SRTM and GTOPO30 tiled datasets. This file, elev_index.sdc, is located in the \srtm_void_filled\data_quality folder.
GTOPO30 Source Index
This index represents the geographic extents of the data sources used to create the GTOPO30 Digital Elevation Model. This file, gtopo30_source.sdc, is located in the \srtm_void_filled\data_quality folder.
