Introduction

Electric Guitar Coach makes learning and improving playing quick and enjoyable. If you play already, it will be a great practice partner with ‘real audio’ full band backing tracks and in-depth multimedia instruction. Electric Guitar Coach will refine your Technique, Lead, and Rhythm playing and give you some great songs to work on. For beginners, Electric Guitar Coach kicks off with a step by step guide to getting started in the right way, and an immediate chance to start playing easy lead guitar solos and famous tracks.

Whether you’re an experienced player or a complete beginner, each lesson starts off by introducing something new like a fret hand technique, a new scale, or new chord ideas. You then learn a Cool Track or Study which will help you perfect it. You practise what you learn with video and backing tracks at different speeds.

The extensive video uses the most advanced technology to bring you crystal clear views of exactly what to play and there is a full range of angles, shots, and speeds to choose from.

Beginners

For beginners, Electric Guitar Coach is the perfect way to get started.

The 5 lessons in Level 1 take you through everything you need to learn to make a really good start. All the basics like tuning, getting a sound, holding the guitar and how to get your hands playing comfortably, are covered with the help of video, audio, and illuminating graphics.

Once you’ve got the basics in Level 1 you’re immediately in to Level 2 and playing real music.

Level Two Lesson Guide

‘Essential Guitar Skills’ starts to build up good playing technique. It has lessons in ‘Picking’ and ‘Fretting’ and some excellent exercises to loosen up your fingers and get them playing fluently.

‘First Solos’ teaches Lead Guitar playing. First of all you’ll learn to read rhythms. This is essential so that you can play the 2 Lead Guitar tracks that follow. Even though the Lead Guitar tracks you’ll learn here are simple, they sound great because they come with real audio, full band backing tracks. Though you’re a beginner without much experience you’ll be able to make a great sound by playing these solos with the band.

‘Power Chords’ are a classic rock guitar sound. You work through a series of lessons covering ‘Open’ and ‘Closed’ Power chords and do some Power Chord Exercises that prepare you for the songs that are coming up.

‘Backing with Power Chords’ contains lessons which show you how to add rhythm to your Power Chords in order play Rock Rhythm Guitar. The 2 Rhythm Guitar Tracks come with full band accompaniment and again even though you’re really just starting out as a guitarist, you’ll be playing guitar tracks that sound fantastic.

‘Bush and Placebo’ is all about learning 2 famous songs. As a beginner we believe that you should get the chance to play great music right from the start. This is usually tricky because well known songs are mostly too difficult for beginners. We’ve found tracks though that while they push you to the limit, you’ll have a great time getting to grips with them. ‘Swallowed’ by Bush and ‘Nancy Boy’ by Placebo are 2 fantastic tracks. These would have seemed impossible at the start of Electric Guitar Coach but by the end of Level 2 you’ll have learnt enough to play some famous tracks which any guitarist would be proud to play.

Electric Guitar Coach works because it teaches you in the best way possible. You can repeat things as many times as you need and the video and backing tracks make practising easy. If you’re starting out getting Electric Guitar Coach will be one of the best moves you’ll make. Guaranteed.

If you already play

If you play already, you’ll find Levels 1 and 2 will help you remember some things that you’ve maybe forgotten and give you some songs you may have missed out on. Levels 3, 4, and 5 will really give you lots of new stuff to work on. Take as an example Level 4 which concentrates on Rock and Blues:

Level Four Lesson Guide

‘Tools of the Trade’ builds up your Technique. It has lessons on, ‘Hammer-Ons’, ‘Pull-Offs‘, ‘Trills’, ‘Bends’, ‘Vibrato’ and ‘Slides’. You work on these by practising a series of ‘Classic Riffs’ which use all the different techniques.

‘Blues Soloing’ works on your Lead Guitar playing and starts off with lessons on the ‘Minor Pentatonic’ and ‘Blues Scales’ and lessons which look at ‘Straight’, ‘Shuffle’ and ‘Swing’ feels. You then learn 2 Lead Guitar Solo’s, the first is based on the Minor Pentatonic Scale with a Shuffle feel, the second is a lush solo based on the Blues Scale with a Swing 3 feel. Towards the end of ‘Blues Soloing’, you perform the Solos with real audio, full band backing tracks. This is great fun and you’ll experience what it’s like to play with a great band.

‘New Kinds of Chords’ extends your chord knowledge and provides lessons in how to improve Barre technique and how to use barres to play different chords. 7th chords are covered in detail and you also look at how to move open chord shapes all over the guitar to create some great new sounds. You then work on exercises that will build up your skills in these areas.

‘Blues Backing’ concentrates on Rhythm Guitar and has lessons in ‘Strum Hand Articulation’ and ‘Fret Hand Articulation’. These show you how to make your playing sound a lot more like the guitar playing you hear from famous bands. You then learn 2 Rhythm Guitar tracks in 2 classic styles. Again, just like with the Lead solos, you can perform what you learn with a full band.

‘Eric Clapton and Black Sabbath’ is a ‘Cool Trax’ lesson which has 3 songs to learn: ‘Before You Accuse Me’ which is a classic blues track, and ‘Sunshine of Your Love’ and ‘Paranoid’ which are 2 classic rock tracks. You learn the central guitar parts from all 3 songs and perform them with video and the full backing band. These songs use everything you’ve learnt in Level 4 and you’ll find that after working through the whole of Level 4, you’ll have a great time performing these Cool Trax.

Level 4 like every Level, is packed with great material and stuff that all guitarists should know. Looking at all the different things in this one Level should give you a feel for the size and depth of Electric Guitar Coach and how at £25.52 ex VAT (£29.99 inc and US$39.95) it really does offer tremendous value.

Cutting Edge Video

Since Guitar Coach software was first published in 1997, its video component has been singled out for particular praise not just because there’s so much in each product but because it shows you everything possible to help you learn. In Electric Guitar Coach the video is even better.

The Charanga Artists

Electric Guitar Coach uses both original songs and songs by some of the world’s great artists.

Click on the links below for information, links and newsgroups about the bands and artists whose songs are used in Electric Guitar Coach.

Black Sabbath

‘Paranoid’ from the 1970 album of the same name is a famous rock track. With Tony Iommi on guitar, it was famously recorded in only 5 days. Paranoid uses Power Chords, Palm Muting and Hammer-Ons and appears in Level 4 of Electric Guitar Coach.

Bryan Adams

‘Run To You’ appears in Level 5 of Electric Guitar Coach and uses fast cross string picking, moved open chord shapes and off beat strumming.

Bush

‘Swallowed’ appears very early on in Electric Guitar Coach and is a great song for using power chords all over the guitar. Written by Gavin Rossdale and appearing on Bush’s ‘Razorblade Suitcase’ album, it’s a great example of how a great songwriter can write a classic song using very few chords.

Dodgy

‘One of Those Rivers’ is a great guitar/vocal track from Dodgy’s excellent 1997 album ‘Free Peace Sweet’. The song is played fingerstyle and makes a lot of use of barre technique. It comes in Level 5 of Electric Guitar Coach where fingerstyle playing is covered in some detail.

Eric Clapton

‘Sunshine of Your Love’ is a famous track that every guitarist should know how to play. It uses lots of different techniques such as slides, bends and vibrato, to create memorable guitar riffs, and appears in Level 4 of Electric Guitar Coach.

Green Day

In ‘Time of Your Life’ Billie Joe Armstrong shows himself to be a sublime singer/songwriter/guitarist. It appears in Level 3 of Electric Guitar Coach where all the open chords are covered.

Placebo

Though Nancy Boy is a very fast song it uses almost entirely power chords and appears very early in Electric Guitar Coach. It’s very exciting to play especially when you play with the full band accompaniment.

Paul Weller

‘The Changing Man’ is one of the many brilliant songs on Paul Weller’s ‘Stanley Road’ album. It involves fast cross string plectrum technique and appears in Level 5 of Electric Guitar Coach.
