Darin (born Darin Zanyar on June 2, 1987) is a pop singer from Sweden. Darin is of Kurdish descent. Besides English and Swedish, Darin also speaks Kurdish.
In 2004, he became the runner-up on the Swedish Idol, acquiring a large number of fans. In the beginning of 2005, Darin released his first record “The Anthem” after signing a deal with record label SonyBMG in 2004. The album went gold and his first single “Money for nothing” went straight up to number 1 on the radio chart for several months and sold platinum.
Media announced Darin to be the most media exposed person in Sweden during 2005. They were often writing about his hysterical fans, “Beatles-Hysteria”, “Sweden’s Michael Jackson”, “A perfect popstar”, “The future is Darin” were often common headlines. He became so big in Sweden that people started naming their newborns Darin. The name increased with 120 per cent and became the most cumulative name in Sweden.
The same year he released his 2nd album “Darin” which went platinum and provided him even more success than his debut album. The album included his number 1 gold selling single “Step up” and “Want ya!” which was the most played video on MTV during 2006. ”Step up” stayed top 10 on the singles-chart for 16 weeks even while releasing the second single “Who’s that girl”, leaving him with 2 top 10 chart positions.
In 2006, he won a Grammis, Rockbjörn, Nickelodeon Kids choice award and The Voice 06 Award in Sweden. He also won an NRJ Award for best Nordic song in Finland.
At the end of 2006, Darin released his 3rd album “Break the News”. It went straight to number 1 in the chart and went gold the first day, making him the best selling male artist at SonyBMG Sweden from 2005 forward, with three number 1 records within two years.
Following his success in Sweden, Darin signed a new deal with EMI Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In 2007 he did a lot of promotion in Germany. His single “Insanity” ended up on the top 20 lists on the charts and was a success, both on radio and TV.
Darin’s music has influenced many artists and bands around the world, in countries such as Germany, Japan, Russia and even in the UK where singer Leona Lewis decided to cover the ballad “Homeless” on her album.
Darin has worked with some of the world’s greatest producers; RedOne, Jörgen Elofsson, David Jassy, Max Martin, and Murlyn whom have produced and written songs for artists like Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Celine Dion and many more.
In 2005, Darin was awarded the Kurd of the Year prize by Swedish Minister for Public Health and Social Services Morgan Johansson. On 3rd of December 2008, Darin will release his fourth studio album "Flashback", his 2 managers Micke Hagerman and Ludovic Faroult will make a worldwide dimension to Darin with collaborations with Red One and Darkchild.
