Symantec Norton Ghost(TM) 9.0 Readme

Minimum System Requirements for Norton Ghost 9.0
- Windows XP Home Edition, XP Professional Edition, 2000
Pro SP2 or later
- 233 MHz Intel or AMD compatible processors
- 256 MB RAM
- 70 MB of available hard disk space
- 40 MB of available hard disk space required for Microsoft
.NET Framework
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later

To work with hard drives that are 128 GB or larger, Norton
Ghost requires, at minimum, Microsoft Windows 2000 Service
Pack 3 or Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1.

- The following is a list of files that are installed
outside the default folder location where the software
is installed. All of these files are removed during an
uninstall of the software.

> (Windows 2000) <system_drive_letter>:WINNTsystem32
(Windows XP) <system_drive_letter>:WINDOWSsystem32
(The two files above are by the GEARAspiWDM driver.)

> (Windows 2000) <system_drive_letter>:WINNTsystem32drivers
(Windows XP) <system_drive_letter>:WINDOWSsystem32drivers
These are the drivers that are installed by the application.

These files are temporary shortcuts and icons created by MSI for

Symantec Recovery Disk
- If you set the time zone in the main window of Symantec Recovery
Disk, be sure you exit the recovery environment properly by
clicking Exit, also from the main window of the recovery environment.
This will ensure that the computer's CMOS clock remains unchanged
(or reset to its original time). Do not exit the recovery environment
by pressing the computer's restart button.

- Japanese version only - When you specify a computer share name or
a domain name, you cannot enter Kanji characters; you must specify
an IP address instead.

- When you click Help in the recovery environment main window, you may
get a Windows Help error dialog box. You can disregard the error. Just
click OK twice to display the help file.

Restoring Backup Images from CD or DVD
- When you are restoring a backup image from DVD or CD, you may
be prompted two separate times to accept the moving of data
from the media. Click OK each time. After the second time the
restore will begin.

Backup Image Browser
- When mounting a backup image as a drive letter under
Windows 2000, the drive will appear to be a read-write
drive when it is actually read-only. Any changes you make
to the drive, such as deleting or copying files to the
drive, will be lost when the backup image is dismounted.

Files That Remain Following an Uninstall
- The following is a list of files that remain on a computer
following an uninstall of the software. If you want,
you can manually delete these files inside the specified
folder, however, it is not necessary.

<system_drive_letter>ocuments and SettingsAdministratorApplication DataIsolatedStorage
The IsolatedStorage folder contains some folders and
several .XML and .DAT files. These are files used by
the Microsoft .NET Framework application to store window
sizes, locations, and so forth.

<system_drive_letter>ocuments and SettingsAdministratorLocal Settings
Application DataApplication History
The Application History folder contains three .INI files:
ngen.exe.89f695a3.ini, PolMigrate.exe.b48b92de.ini, and
V2iConsole.exe.d0888215.ini. These .INI files are created by the
Microsoft .NET Framework for each .NET application that is run.

<system_drive_letter>ocuments and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataSymantec
This folder contains the "hpc" folder required for software
license enforcement.

Limited User Rights
- Additional rights and privileges that the application
requires to run are the following:

> Backup Files and Directories
> Restore Files and Directories
> Perform Volume Maintenance Tasks
> Load and Unload device drivers

The service can only be run by a user that belongs to the
Administrators group.

- If you encounter the following: "Error (The object invoked has
disconnected from its clients.)," the computer (typically a
remotely managed computer) has either crashed or the service has
stopped running.

- Norton Ghost is not integrated with Microsoft's Volume
Shadow Copy service.

- Using Norton Ghost with Norton Disk Doctor:
Using Norton Ghost to back up a partition (C: for example)
while using Norton Disk Doctor to optimize the same partition,
at the same time, may cause applications to run slower due to
higher than usual CPU usage. You should avoid running both
applications at the same time.

- Norton Ghost does not support RAM drives.
