A friend who I'd been hipping to new sounds of jazz wanted to switch things around a bit in 2002...so he gave me a cd to listen to instead. Surprised, but flatteredby his thoughtfulness, i gave the cd a spin, and before long he was asking me for the cd and I was refusing to return it. This is the magic of Bebel effortless music. Mellow enough to be background music, but stylish enough to get everyone taking notice and asking about "who's this playing right now" Hope y'all enjoy this!

All the files here range from standard to blazing high quality mp3 files. 320vbr albums were converted via dbPowerAMP from LOSSLESS sources using the Alt Preset Extreme Setting. The sources of the albums include bittorrent, emule+, soulseek, DC++ (and my personal collection) and have all been checked and double-checked for consistency (i.e. they are all whole albums as opposed to the kazaa gathering method), and none seem to be lossy to lossy transcodes. All Folders have been labelled with as much info as possible, so you know exactly what you're downloading when you decide to.

Bebel Gilberto (born Isabel Gilberto on May 12, 1966 in New York City) is a Grammy Award-nominated Brazilian popular singer often associated with bossa nova. She is the daughter of João Gilberto and singer Miúcha. Her uncle is singer/composer Chico Buarque. Bebel has been performing since her youth in Rio de Janeiro.

At the age of seven, Bebel made an appearance on her mother's first solo album 'Miucha'. At age nine, Bebel performed with her mother and jazz saxophonist Stan Getz at a jazz festival in New York's Carnegie Hall. Back in Brazil, Bebel performed and recorded for the soundtrack of the children's musical 'Os Saltimbancos', written by Sergio Bardotti and Chico Buarque. Later on Bebel joined an experimental theatrical group and was a member of the founding team of the performance space 'Circo Voador' (Flying Circus) at Ipanema Beach. In this group she met singer/songwriter Cazuza, who became a close friend and soon a major rock star in Brazil during the '80s.

Her father may be the legendary Brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto, but in 2000 daughter Bebel proved that she understands the bossa nova, too. There's a subtlety throughout this recording that makes Bebel's voice entrancing, as she re-creates the sensual essence of bossa nova before running with it into electronic territory toward the album's end. Tanto Tempo is an even-tempered statement that manages to showcase Bebel's own sexy voice while gracefully remembering the past. --Karen K. Hugg

Bebel Gilberto appears to be the figurehead of 21st-century bossa nova, so it's only fitting she should be the subject of one of the biggest 21st-century trends, the remix. But when the remixes are done as well as this, it actually adds to the original album. Her languid, sensual vocals are still the cornerstone, but Rae & Christian's more upbeat take on "Bananeira" propels the song to the dance floor, while Trüby Trio evoke the shantytown favelas, home of samba, on the percussive "Sem Contencao." A couple of the tracks might seem more like limp Sade than tropical Bebel, but for the most part there's plenty of invention occurring, as with Da Lata's gorgeous interpretation of "August Day Song." In addition to all of the aforementioned, King Britt, Ananda Project, and 4hero are among the studio whizzes who lend their high-profile talents to Gilberto, making Tanto Tempo into something reborn. --Chris Nickson

The smash success of Bebel Gilberto's turn-of-the-century hit Tanto Tempo would lead many to believe that she was an overnight success. But this recording, released in Japan in 1991 and available now for the first time in the U.S., highlights her smooth, Sade-like sound. Joined by the legendary Brazilian bassist Luisão Maia, this project puts Gilberto's cool contralto in more traditional bossa-nova-style settings with synthesized string arrangements. The result is a snappy, Creed Taylor-sounding CD. The best selections are the title track, the "One Note Samba" syncopated composition "Amor Unilateral," and "Quando o Ceu Nao Estava Azul," which includes a silky Stan Getz-style tenor sax solo. Think of this recording as Bebel Gilberto's syncopated first draft. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

With the release of her debut Tanto Tempo in 2000, the Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto and the late DJ Suba redefined the bossa nova sound. Her sophomore effort, produced by Marius de Vries, the soundmeister behind Madonna, Annie Lennox and Bjork, was recorded in Rio, Bahia, London and New York. Gilberto's cool contralto sings sweetly over synths, strings, percussion acoustic piano and horns. Daniel Jobim and Pedro Baby contributed compositions. Caetano Veloso's "Baby" features lyrics by Os Mutantes, and Carlinhos Brown's candomblé-cadenced, "Aganju" swings with a nod to Africa. Bebel's hushed vocals reveal the influences of her father, the legendary Joao Gilberto, and of her mother Miucha on the electro-bossa beats of "Winter." Ditto the ocean-breezed "O Caminho," with jazzy orchestrations and pianisms provided by Joao Donato. This disc aims for the ear rather than the hips, but don't be surprised if future remixes could flip that sonic script. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Daughter of original Bossa Nova legends Joao Gilberto and Miucha, niece of the great singer-songwriter Chico Burque, Bebel Gilberto's talents have proven more than worthy of her exalted descent. She has not only helped to revitalize modern Brazilian music but has established it as a major force on the world stage. But are these 13 remixes worthy of her? The answer is a qualified yes. The whole point of this type of exercise is to reveal new facets of an existing track by inviting another artist to collaborate on it--after the fact. Everyone involved with these re-workings displays considerable taste and restraint; thus any negative impressions would have to be completely subjective. The originals were produced by Marius de Vries and were comparatively pop-oriented anyway. Gently-imposed beats and touches of chilly electronica do not freeze the singer's digital hothouse bloom but add an additional dimension. Some tunes, such as Céu Distante, even emerge embellished with a surprisingly genteel, retro finesse. --Christina Roden

Three discs into her acclaimed solo career, it's a no-brainer that the Brazilian pop charms of Bebel Gilberto will conjure a slew of beach-inspired adjectives. "Refreshing," "wind-swept" and "sun-kissed" spring to mind. Momento continues Gilberto's trend of crafting sultry scenes of afternoon delight via tunes that both adhere to traditions and sound ultra-modern. But she also mixes things up a bit in the process. Gilberto's sensual delivery--featured here in English and in Portuguese--hovers in and around each song, more an extension of the rhythms than the showpiece. Make no mistake, though: Gilberto's vocal work is a thing of beauty. She again blends bossa nova, samba, pop and electronica flourishes, but no one genre overpowers any other. Liliting guitars give way to pulsing percussion and horns, which crash against loops and samples. Gilberto coos amid the catchy club flavor of "Bring Back the Love," and the moonlit "Close to You" recalls Sade. The daughter of Brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto even tackles Cole Porter's "Night and Day," recasting it as a hushed moment of bossa loveliness.
