VAGGELIS KARIPIS (percussionist)
Born in Athens in 1971, Vaggelis Karipis entered the world of percussions at the age of sixteen. He was an autodidact. Later on he decided that he wanted to work on Greek traditional music, and so he studied oud and Byzantine Music.
He has collaborated with distinguish Greek composers and singers, such as Elefteria Arvanitaki, Dionysis Savvopoulos, George Dalaras, Domna Samiou, Alkinoos Ioanidis, Chronis Aidonidis, and he has performed in many concerts and inside and outside Greece (Womad, Sfinx, Meinz).
He has participated in numerous recordings and live performances of prominent soloists (Manos Achalinotopoulos, Yiottis Kiourtsoglou, ??∩??ra Dinkjan, Zohar Fresco, Arto Tuncboyaciayan, Theodossi Spasov, Haig Yazdjian )
In 1998 he forms with Petros Kourtis and Andreas Papas the percussion trio KROTALA, and they give several concerts in Greece and abroad (1999 - 5th World Percussion Festival, Berkley College of Music, Boston / 2003 - Rythmstick Festival, Royal Albert Hall, London).
He has attended seminars on jazz-ethnic percussions with some of the most significant musicians of this musical scene such as Tricy Sankaran, Joe Santos, Jamey Haddad and Alfredo Reyes.
He has released two albums 'KROUSTA' in 1995 along with Andreas Papas and Giorgos Gevgelis and 'KROTALA' in 2002 in collaboration with Petros Kourtis and Andreas Papas
He also teaches traditional percussions in Music High schools and Conservatories in Athens.
