NTSC, from 1946. Susanne Wallner returns to the ruins of Berlin from a concentration camp after World War II to discover that someone else lives in her apartment: Dr. Hans Mertens, a former officer and surgeon in the German army who's haunted by memories of his role in the war. Through Susanne's caring, the broken man gathers new strength and courage, but discovers that the shadow of his past cannot be avoided.
The Soviets have already started to infuse their propaganda into the media only one year after the war has ended. Still a good film from a great studio, East Germany's DEFA. Snapshot of Berlin life directly after the war.
