Goblins 1-3
FULL / MDF

[ [RQ] Goblins 1 3 (Full / mdf) [Puzzle/Adven /1993] preview 0

Designer: Pierre Gilhodes & Muriel Tramis
Developer: Coktel Vision
Publisher: Sierra On-Line

Gobliiins 1
Year: 1991

Arguably the best Coktel game ever made, lead three wacky goblins on a madcap adventure to restore sanity to the King. The game features wacky but ingenious puzzles, all of which require well-timed co-ordination among the three goblins, each of whom has different abilities that must be carefully exploited. Although the game was billed as an "adventure," it should be more appropriately labelled as a "puzzle adventure" due to the intensity and sheer number of puzzles that overshadow the plot. Gameplay is even structured like a puzzle game: each screen is self-contained, i.e. all items you can get, except special quest items, are only used in the present scene. One of the best things about the game is that you are free to try a wide range of actions; when you use the items inappropriately, the game shows you the results (usually funny) even though it's the wrong action. This is a far cry from boring "sorry, you can't do that" response in most games, and helps make the game a lot more playable and fun.

The game gives you a password for later play after you finish each scene, and there are dozens of them to go through, each more difficult than the rest. With great graphics, wacky but logical puzzles and cast of characters, and charming sense of humor, Gobliiins is a must-have. Just beware that you WILL get frustrated several times in this one ;)

Gobliins 2
Year: 1992

The avalanche of hair-raising puzzles continues in this sequel to Gobliiins 1, albeit with a totally different plot (save Prince Buffoon (yeah, no joke) from the --you guessed it-- the evil maniac). The sound and the graphics are much improved, and the plot, story, and characters are even funnier. As in the first game, one of the charms of Gobliins 2 is the funny animations and character voices, gibberish though they may sound. You'll chuckle at the goblins' antics and their expressions when they are being crushed, bashed, or even eaten.

Don't let the game's cartoony style fool you, though: this is one difficult game-- controlling one less goblin (hence the missing "i" in the title) doesn't make it any easier, especially it is not as obvious as in the first game what each character can do. This makes it much more frustrating than the first game, as many puzzles require trial-and-error. Still, if you like its predecessor, you'll probably like the goblins' second outing. Recommended, but for puzzle experts or anyone with infinite patience only.

Goblins 3
Year: 1993

The last game in Coktel's puzzle adventure series is a very disappointing title that's not worthy of the name. As the title suggests, you control only one goblin this time around since there is only one "i" in the title. The absence of co-ordination puzzles is made up by the sheer amount of puzzles and increased difficulty-- so much so that the game is near impossible to solve without hints or a lot of patience.

What makes the game very frustrating is a number of puzzles that you simply cannot solve without a lot of trial-and-error. For instance, in the second scene you must get through several bad guys. The only way to do that is to randomly try each item you have on each guy until one works-- each guy needs one particular item, but there is no way to deduce which one. No clue whatsover. If you're a masochist, have a lot of free time on your hands, or want to burn your brain cells at a faster rate, then Goblins 3 might be for you. The rest of us are advised to stay away and play the first 2 games in the series instead.

All three games are multi-language (Eng, Ger, Fre and i think Spa & Ita, too)

I TRIED TO RUN THEM UNDER XP BUT WITHOUT ANY LUCK! However, some time ago i played 1&2 on my old laptop (Win98) and everything was ok. So if somebody knows how to play them under XP, please let me know.
