SystemSoft, a Japanese software company mostly known for its hardcore hex warfare strategy games, surprised Japanese gamers in the late 1990's by teaming up with Studio TRON to produce a very different sort of game in White Diamond.
White Diamond is a action-based RPG with gameplay very similar to such Japanese titles as Falcom's Ys series, but with the addition of a strong Dating Simulation aspect and quests that you pick up at guilds that add a level of freedom and non-linear gameplay, not unlike the Lunatic Dawn RPG series. The game allows you to play as a fighter or mage type depending on your focus.
The game progresses with a clock and calendar, and times of day. Characters appear in different locations depending on the time of day, and quests picked up at "the guild" expire after certain dates. Events tied to dates make romancing all of the various women in the story a challenge for completists, and multiple possible outcomes add replay value to this unique and deceptively deep game.
Translated & paraphrased from website (originally Japanese):
"RPG elements of Fantasy and Romance fuse in White Diamond. As the main character, the hero of White Diamond, you will meet and romance many women as the multi-branched story progresses in real time, each woman with her own schedule and routines.
The Hero must rid the surrounding areas of dangerous monsters or perform other quests that boost his mental and physical prowess while experiencing a wide variety of story changing events. The Hero has both intellect and brawn parameters that give him the ability to cope with the events in the womens' personal stories and develop them further, raising the level of their affection towards him.
The Hero's decisions in conversations and how he interacts with the women can also increase the level of affection, according to their preferences for different types of men and behaviors.
Over 200 visual events appear in artwork throughout the game for the many story connections, with beautiful visual animation, enriching the story."
Playing in Windows Vista:
Windows Vista will pop up with a "This is a Windows 95 Game" message during install and ask if you want to "force it". Say "Yes".
Once installed it will fail to place an icon in the start menu (at least it did in my case). Go to the Progam Files folder on your primary disk and find White Diamond under "SystemSoft Game". Make a shortcut of the executable with the girl's face icon and place it on your desktop or in your start menu. Right click the icon and go into Properties, then the Compatibility tab. Set it to Windows 95 like this:
Once you've done that it should run like a charm. If you fail to do this, you will likely notice the program error out soon after the game introduction. I have not tried playing the game in Windows XP or 2000.
How to Patch:
1. Extract the patch files by running the wdup101.exe file.
2. Place the extracted "event" files in the "event" folder in the directory you installed White Diamond into (usually ?Program Files?SystemSoft Game?WD).
At the game splash screen, choose settings, then select the option as shown in this screenshot for a JOYSTICK. If you don't have some kind of a USB joypad then you can use the cursors or number keypad and the space bar, but I recommend the Joystick option for play since you'll have frequent encounters in dungeons, etc. that require some agility, and the whole game seems more tailored to console style play.
Be careful of how you interact with the women in game. One of the first you meet, "Meru", likes strong men, so don't be modest. And it might help to pick up a guild quest with some bandits to kill before even talking to her at all (I still have yet to try that path).
In towns, you'll find the Guilds (in the starting town it's in the same place as the inn), which is where you pick up quests. Note that the quests will have dates when they expire once you accept them. The calendar is what flashes by each day change with a date like "Month 7, Day 1". (If you can read Japanese, see the manual excerpt scan in the torrent for more details on the calendar days and days of the week). Once you have a quest, new map options will open up to you.
When low on health in dungeons, if you see a little fairy flying around, talk with her (same action as attacking really, just "bump" up against her) and choose the "mou dame da" option to heal up as shown in this shot:
For those who enjoyed this torrent, nearly 7 years after White Diamond's debut, SystemSoft released a good sequel, White Diamond 2 (more of a Strategy RPG than an Action one), that is now being sold in a 2-CD pack and can be had through a custom order for a little over 20 bucks from a site like HimeyaShop.
