Torrent description

The 2 year update!

This is the same great Nagios VMware Virtual machine created 2 years ago(www.mininova.org/tor/582814), but updated to run on the latest version of SuSE 10.3 and including new NSclient checks to monitor the performance of everything you can imagine on Windows boxes, including MSExchange, MSSQL, DNS, DHCP, and more! Courtesy of GWMOS, this build also includes the plugins for NSCA, NRPE, SNMP, SSH and more.

Also, this may be the first collection of checks released for Nagios that will tell you whether your 32-bit Windows box needs the /3GB boot.ini switch or not... No more guessing and the end of generalizations that don't necessarily apply to your scenario!

This VM with its full KDE desktop is specially designed for the Windows SysAdmin who either doesn't understand a lick of Linux or only dabbles in it from time to time... Included is a one page FAQ that should address just about anything a Windows SysAdmin would need to know to support this VM.

For those who do not require a full desktop, GWOS has released their own VM which compared to this build includes more graphing reports, a different method of storing User credentials and a slightly different look.

Also, for anyone is very new to GWOS and Nagios, I recommend downloading PPT slides from presentations I have given at my website.

A description from the FAQ included in this build...

What do you get with this VM?
A time-saving pre-configured, Groundworkopensource deployment, fully configured to auto-update and auto-install critical updates(beware the consequences, see "Security" comments)

GroundworkOpenSource which IMO is one of the best web interfaces to one of the most powerful network and server monitoring applications around, Nagios.
As a default GroundworkOpenSource deployment, this VM can monitor only itself but includes extensive documentation and links to resources which enable monitoring other machines.

For the completely uninitiated to Nagios, I estimate that this VM saves a considerable amount of time but only gets you about 30% to a full deployment.

For the experienced, this VM provides a totally portable, quick to deploy and quick to backup piece of a potentially highly redundant monitoring system which can save hours of tedious installation and configuration.

Note: Although not a "minimal" installation and although I've left many probably unnecessary things installed in this VM for easy newbie use, much has been removed that would have made this a machine "for fun." If you're looking for an intro to SuSE, I recommend a default install instead of this VM which is stripped of about 1gb of default applications.
