The UnReal World (URW) is a realistic graphical roguelike RPG set in Iron age Finland by Sami Maaranen.
URW doesn't have any character classand has tribes instead of race. URW doesn't have a plot so players cando what they please. They can hunt, explore caves, go fishing, buildtheir own house, or even get married—it's really all up to the player. There are no fantasy elements in URW except gods and magic. You createa character by choosing his name and tribe- then the skills in whichyour character will specialise.
URW features a huge, expansive gameworld in which the playercharacter will encounter NPCs, both friendly and hostile, as well asanimals of all sorts. There are many ways to play using the plethora ofskills at your disposal. One can be nomadic and wander from place toplace, gathering the necessary food from hunting and fishing. Or onemay settle down by building a house to live in. It is all up to theplayer.
The world is also filled with dangers. The player may starve ordehydrate. There are animals that will eat the player, as well as thebelligerent Njerpez warriors. The winter can be said to be the ultimatetest of one's resourcefulness as the mere cold will become a lethalantagonist in itself. To top this off, a popular choice with players isthe scenario titled "Hurt, helpless and afraid", in which the playerwill begin with numerous (often quite debilitating) injuries. Thisscenario is most often picked in winter, as to provide the greatestchallenge.
The latest version of URW (2.90B) was published on 20-01-2006, andis the first native version for Windows. It is also compatible withLinux through Wine. Once a stable version for Windows is released, theauthor plans to continue gameplay updates and bug fixes on the Windowsplatform.
