Cela fait longtemps que l'esthète de la musique brésilienne, Gilberto Gil, demeure fasciné par l'un des musiciens noirs les plus emblématiques du Tiers-Monde : Bob Marley. Pour son nouvel album, le chanteur a décidé d'emmener son groupe dans les mythiques studios Tuff Gong du roi du reggae (à Kingston) afin de capter une série de reprises. Could You Be Loved, One Drop, Buffalo Soldier ou No Woman No Cry : voici une série de titres qui ont bercé les années « jamaïcaines » de Gil. Mais on retiendra aussi une version prenante de Kaya N'Gan Daya, d'après l'original Kaya, qui donna son nom à l'album de Marley du même nom.

The Brazilian-born Gilberto Gil and the Jamaican reggae legend Bob Marley became superstars thanks to their passionate and political songs. One of the most requested tunes in Gil's career is his rendition of Marley's "No Woman, No Cry," and in 1984, Gil recorded with Marley's group, the Wailers. So the samba-reggae mix of this thrilling and throbbing tribute to Marley was not hard for him to pull off. Recorded in the legendary Tuff Gong studio in Kingston, Gil's silken, Portuguese/English vocals beautifully translate Marley's message music, with a little help from the Wailers, Marley's backup singers, the I-Threes, the drum-bass duo of Sly and Robbie on "Could You Be Loved," and the Brazilian group Paralamas do Sucesso. Gil puts his bouncy, Bahian stamp on these timeless roots riddims, from the Rastafied title track to the forro-fueled rendition of "Three Little Birds" and the little-heard "Lick Samba."
