Cradle Of Filth est sans doute l'un des plus célèbre et controversé groupe de black-metal.
Le groupe se forme au début des années 1990, en Angleterre autour de Dani au chant, Paul Ryan à la guitare, John Richards à la basse, Ben Ryan au clavier et Darren à la batterie.
Dès ses premières apparitions, le groupe clame sa parenté avec la scène norvégienne et adopte le maquillage noir à la King Diamond.
En 1992, Cradle Of Filth publie une première démo nommée Invoking The Unclean.
Le line-up évolue et Robin (alias Nocturnal Pulse) rejoint la formation.
Une seconde démo est publiée : Orgastic Pleasures.
L'année suivante, le groupe change encore de line-up (ce qui va devenir une habitude)
Cradle sort une nouvelle démo en décembre 1993 : Total Fucking Darkness.
Le groupe signe alors avec le label Cacophonous Records.
Un changement de batteur et Cradle publie son premier album, nommé The Principle of Evil Made Flesh. Quasiment 32 000 copies s'écoulent.
Nouveaux changements de line-up avec Damien Grégori et Stuart Anstis qui prennent leurs marques au clavier et à la guitare.
Tout ce beau monde enregistre alors un EP nommé V Empire, en 1996.
La même année sort l'opus Dusk And Her Embrace.
Deux ans passent, de nouveaux changements au niveau des membres s'effectuent et c'est au tour de l'album Cruelty And The Beast de voir le jour en 1998. Le disque explose les ventes avec plus de 250 000 exemplaires vendus.
Le phénomène Cradle Of Filth prend une ampleur mondiale. Les scéances de dédicasses se transforment en émeutes, les concerts sont archi-pleins, etc. Le groupe remporte d'ailleurs à plusieurs reprises des récompenses de "meilleur live"
En octobre 1999 sort l'EP From The Cradle To Enslave. Cradle est à nouveau propulsé en haut des charts et enchaîne sur une tournée des plus grands festivals.
En 2000 sort Midian, suivi de Bitter Suites To Succubi, un nouvel EP, publié en 2001 chez Abracadaver.
En 2002, Cradle signe son premier double album : Lovecraft and Witch Hearts.
S'en suit un album live nommé Live Bait For The Dead la même année, puis Damnation And A Day en 2003 et Nymphetamine en 2004 (année de signature chez Roadrunner Records)
