Children Of Bodom fait parti de ces quelques groupes de metal Finlandais.
Originaire d'une petite ville nommée Espoo située tout près d'Helsinki, les premiers membres de COB fondèrent en 1993 un groupe nommé Inearthed.
Cette formation (très proche musicalement de COB) réalisa pas moins de trois démos de 4 titres chacune : Implosion Of Heaven, Ubiquitos Absence Of Remission enregistrée en 1994 dans les studio Astia et enfin Shining en 1996.
Inearthed était alors composé d'Alexis et Jaska (fondateurs), d'Alexander Kuoppala, d'Henkka Seppälä et de l'ancien synthé J. Pirisjoki, arrivés peu après.
Et c'est justement peu après l'enregistrement des démos que Janne Wirman remplaça J.Pirisjoki qui quitta le groupe.
En 1997 tout ce petit monde pars pour la Belgique et enregistre leur premier véritable album : Something Wild.
Ce premier opus séduit Ewo Rytkönen (patron de Spinefarm) qui propose alors un contrat de trois albums à nos compères. Ils acceptent et renomment leur groupe : Children Of Bodom.
Ce nom étrange provient d'un fais divers tragique finlandais. Bodom est en effet le nom d'un lac où se 4 adolescents furent attaquer durant une nuit de camping à coups de hache par un détraqué... Un seul des 4 survécu. Il est aujourd'hui enfermé dans un hopital psychatrique pendant que le tueur cours toujours...
Après Something Wild, le groupe rencontre Dimmu Borgir et entamme avec eux une tournée européenne.
En 1999 le groupe sort le titre Downfall extrait de l'album Hatebreeder qui connu un énorme succès au Japon. Ce succès est tel que le groupe sort un album live intitulé Tokyo Warhearts
. En 2001 Children Of Bodom revient en puissance avec Follow The Reaper : un album black-métal bien plus aboutit.
En 2003 sort Hate Crew Deathroll. La même année le guitariste Alexander Kuoppala quitte le groupe et laisse sa place à Roope Latvala.
