I "fixed" the problem in Windows XP by changing my settings in Control Panel
-> Sounds and Audio Devices
-> Audio tab
-> "Advanced..." button in Sound playback section
-> Performance tab.

Lower your Hardware Acceleration to "Basic acceleration"
and sound should come out of both speakers.
Might make your game slow down even more, though.
