*** The events of the game occur during Thanksgiving 1991, two years after the events in Ghostbusters II. Players portray a new recruit hired to test Egon Spengler and Ray Stantz's new experimental equipment, during a recent rise of paranormal activity. A basic training exercise for the rookie accidentally frees Slimer and another ghost, leading the Ghostbusters to head back to the Sedgewick Hotel, where Slimer initially haunted, to catch him, only to find the hotel having many more ghosts than they thought should be there. After catching Slimer and several other ghosts there, they find the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man has somehow returned, wreaking havoc on New York City, while pursuing someone. This later ends up being Dr Ilyssa Selwyn, on of the head's of the city museum's new Gozer exhibit. After destroying Stay-Puft, and taking Ilyssa back to their base, the team is confronted by the return of Walter Peck, who has been named by mayor Jaques Mulligan as the head of the Paranormal Contract Oversight Committee, or P-COC, a group that reviews and monitors any government contracts with paranormal investigators and exterminators and as such, the Ghostbusters' new de facto boss. The team decides to investigate the museum's Gozer exhibit, but are first called in on a major haunting of the New York library, finding out Eleanor Twitty, the Grey Lady, and the first ghost they encountered from the original movie is behind the haunting. They also later learn the circumstances of her death, as she was killed by "the Collector", a Gozer worshipper who killed her in order to possess the Gozerian Codex, a major book on the ways of Gozzerianism. The team eventually captures Twitty and the book, and destroy the Collector, as well as finding a mysterious glowing symbol on the museum walls. They then head to the museum's Gozer exhibit at the same time as a major gala for the exhibit is being held, that Walter Peck specifically wanted the Ghostbusters banned from, only to have the gala attacked by ghosts, these being led by the former Chairman of the museum, who it is revealed was a loyal follower of Ivo Shandor, the insane architect who designed Dana Barrett's apartment, in the hopes of summoning Gozer. While fighting to rescue Ilyssa from the Chairman, they discover a massive series of tunnels filled with PK energy under the museum, and discover that the symbol was a mandala, that revealed the purpose of the tunnels as being massive nodes being used to funnel energy from four nodes built by Ivo Shandor to fuel the energy to summon another Great Destructor like Gozer. The Nodes are the Library, the Museum, the Sedgewick Hotel, and oddly, a spot in the middle of the Hudson River. The team heads back to the Sedgewick, despite their being banned from going to the Sedgewick by P-COC, and destroy the powerful ghost guarding it's node, the Spiderwitch. After destroying her, the team uses their boat, the Ecto-8, to head to the spot in the Hudson, only to find Shandor Island, an island containing a massive mansion built by Shandor to rise from the river, as the island sank years before upon Ivo Shandor's death. There they learn that Ilyssa is in fact of the Shandor bloodline, and is being used to re-activate the nodes to repower the summoner. The team manages to defeat the node guardian on the island, a Slor, and escape before the island sinks again, only to find their base in chaos. Ilyssa has been kidnapped, and the vault was again shut down, leading to all of the ghosts escaping, with them suspecting that Peck is behind the whole plot, and in fact an insane cultist. They then see a news report of a massive mausoleum rising from the ground in Central Park, and head there to end the plot once and for all. Once they make it to the mausoleum, they find both Ilyssa and Walter Peck chained up to the walls, and discover the mastermind was apparently in fact Mayor Mulligan, only for Winston to mention that it's not Mulligan but in fact Ivo Shandor himself, who possessed the Mayor months ago. Shandor has decided that Gozer failed too many times before, and wants to become the Destructor himself. The Ghostbusters then quickly exorcise Shandor from Mulligan, and try to defeat him, only to be sucked into the Ghostworld, and have a final battle against Shandor's Destructor form, a massive flaming demon. They weaken Shandor, and then once again need to cross the streams, destroying Shandor once and for all. ***
