"If I am to be buried alive, I want to see the shape of my coffin," rages young Serafina, played by Natalie Dormer. She's the daughter of a nobleman in 16th-century Italy who has been sent to a convent because her father can't afford her dowry. Sarah Dunant's beautifully crafted new novel, dramatised over the next two weeks, sees the teenager transform from one who howls at her fate to a girl seemingly silenced by the faith of the Sisters around her. None of the characters are quite that simple, though. The Abbess (played by Eileen Atkins) sticks to the rules - but are they those of God or the local politicians? Zuana, the convent's healer, played by Geraldine James, looks out for Serafina - but is this just a way of changing her own experience of being "buried alive"?
