This is a very unique quadraphonic recording. It is 100% instrumental, using
nothing but percussion instruments. It was recorded live in the studio with
the musicians spread around the room, so all channels are very active and the
listener is engulfed in quadraphonic sound.
The type of music is hard to describe. Mainly, it is a showcase for
percussive instruments, but it is very rhythmic and at times even melodic.
There are certainly elements of jazz and rock, but not in a strict sense.
The music is very free yet retains enough structure so that it doesn't go
too far out. The mood alternates between contemplative and aggressive. This
is not your typical 70's Japanese schmaltz. This is serious music and the
attentive listener will be greatly rewarded.
The music has a very wide dynamic range and there are many moments that are
very quiet. While this record was very clean, there is some surface noise
that can be heard during the quietest moments and is especially noticeable
during the first part of track three. I have been very careful not to use
too much noise reduction to keep the dynamic range and impact of the music
intact. I spent a lot of time playing around with different noise reduction
approaches in an effort to clean this one up. I hope you agree that
maintaining as much dynamic brilliance as possible makes it worth putting up
with a bit of surface noise.
