NOTE from Systemq: Please be aware that I only have episode one of this six-part series from 1992. Hopefully others will have the missing five parts of this excellent series of programmes.
About The Series:
The Works Six-part series celebrating the role of engineering in modern society. Broadcast in 1992, the six episodes were: E01 – Waiting To Work (25-08-92); E02 – Slippery When Wet (01-09-92); E03 – Beating The Bounce (08-09-92); E04 – The Fix (15-09-92); E05 – Accidents Will Happen (22-09-92); E06 – Inside The Box (29-09-92).
The Works was produced by Patrick Uden of Uden Media Ltd (Uden Associates Ltd): “Twenty years after joining Tomorrows World I took this series of six 30-minute technology shows to Michael Jackson, the controller BBC2, as a way of revealing the beauty of hum-drum mechanical things. It was the last series I made using non-linear editing, but we pushed it to its limits by employing the compressed narrative techniques that were beginning to infect programmes with clips ripped from corporate films, and infomercials coupled to text and interviews. It is still shown in schools”. Directed by James Castle (Uden Associates Ltd production).
About The Episode:
Examines the engineering implications of devices that are required to work only once but must work unfailingly, such as ejector seats, fire extinguishers, crash barriers, sprinkler systems, smoke alarms and ring-pull cans. These machines and many others like them wait to work – perfectly – every time. Nature got there first, but to engineer such machines takes a special understanding of what it takes to trigger them.
