Summary:

This is a bizarre, little-known documentary broadcast by the now defunct Television South (TVS) station as part of its futuristic strand, "The Real World". The BFI described this early 80s effort as a "series on developments in science and technology and how these affect ordinary people today". While no rival to Tomorrow's World, it did poach Michael Rodd as one of its presenters and also drew a respectable audience for a regionally produced program.

This particular episode coincided with the launch of the first 3D broadcasts in the UK, and some of this program is shown in 3D, making it one of the first British programs to do so. Viewers were asked to use 3D anaglyph specs given away free with the TV Times that week. After this broadcast, a trailer for [color=#0000ff]Fort Ti was shown, the first of two 3D movies scheduled for that week. The trailer is included at the end of this rip.

This episode features technical studio demonstrations from the two presenters, pre-recorded interviews with 3D experts and lots of clips in 3D. It's basically an attempt to orientate British audiences to the previously unknown world of 3D television in a half 'public information film', half 'brave new world' kind of style. The whole thing is dated in a very funny way; this is probably as close as I have got to watching something like "Look Around You" without it actually wandering into deliberate comedy territory.

After seeing this, I am given to believe that Michael Rodd is the science world's very own Alan Partridge.
