1/4 - Purcell: The Londoner

Conductor and broadcaster Charles Hazlewood does a grand job of explaining Purcell's music, but some viewers may not make it past the early sequence where he delivers a piece to camera from a London pavement. As he strolls towards us, jacket thrown over his shoulder, fashionable shirt unbuttoned, there's a troubling hint of Saturday Night Fever about him (the platform shoes revealed in subsequent scenes don't help). "Look," the shot says, "this may be a classical music show, but hey, I'm no square." It's a low point; after that Hazlewood gets on with talking us through Purcell's brief life and gorgeous music, and we're not distracted again. The Band of the Grenadier Guards and the Choir of Westminster Abbey are among those performing snatches of Purcell's works, while Hazlewood holds forth on the composer's "fantastic gift for making the English language sound sensual". Those keen for more can look forward to the Royal Opera's Dido and Aeneas, showing on BBC4 this Friday.
