First transmitted on ITV during November 2003

The Adventure of English is a British television series (ITV) on the history of the English language presented by Melvyn Bragg as well as a companion book, also written by Bragg. The series ran in 2003.

The series and the book are cast as an adventure story, or the biography of English as if it were a living being, covering the history of the language from its modest beginnings around 500 AD as a minor guttural Germanic dialect to its rise as a truly established global language.

Episode list:

1. Birth of a Language
2. English Goes Underground
3. The Battle for the Language of the Bible
4. "This Earth, This Realm, This England"
5. English in America
6. Speaking Proper
7. The Language of Empire
8. Many Tongues Called English, One World Language

Titles are fairly self-explanatory of contents; pay close attention and try to count how many 'phrases' and 'new words' the script writers manage to slip into a single sentence or paragraph! I wish this kind of thing had been around when I was in high school .

I would happily upgrade the automatic encoding, but I don't understand a word of the guide, sorry Jaffa! And they play just fine anyway.

Edit - I've tried re-encoding after checking back and finding a number of users judge by the numbers, but it would appear that the video at least comes directly from the DVD's original quality writing. AutoGK, the program recommended to me, turns out to be the much advanced replacement of what Jaffa's guide covers; I even tried to find the old version with no success but the pictures in the guide seem to indicate it only goes direct from DVD anyway.
AutoGK refused to work with the files uploading here; I experimented re-rip with higher sound kbps but it made little difference to the video, nor did AGK's re-encoding bring it more then 200kbps higher then what's here, though it accepted the new mpeg. I then tested BitRipper with a file of different source and it came off with almost 2000 video kbps, so I can only conclude that there's too little that can be done to be worthwhile.
The 56kbps sound is perfectly clear, HD fanatics need to bear in mind that the technology is still relatively new and not everything can or will be produced that way, but if you don't want to take my word for the sound then perhaps some of the people who are getting it now can back me up when they have enough to verify? My service can't support many leechers at once anyway, but it is going 23.9/7 so please be patient.
