Songs of Praise – Churches
Date: Sunday 2nd August 2009
Time: 5:30pm – 6:05pm
Channel: BBC One
Presented by Aled Jones
Aled Jones discovers how churches are adapting to life in the 21st century. He visits one church that is home to several businesses and another that has been given a second chance, all thanks to one man.
With hymns from St Martin-in-the-Fields and Hexham Abbey.
REVD. NICHOLAS HOLTAM
Nicholas has been the vicar of St Martin's for the past 10 years. He has also done his bit to contribute towards the programme of renewal at St Martin's, raising £80,000 with a 98 mile sponsored walk!
Crispin Truman is the Chief Executive Officer of the Churches Conservation Trust, the national charity which cares for over 340 of England’s finest historic churches which are no longer required for regular parish worship.
Andrew Wright bought the Church of St. Julian in Shrewsbury when the diocese decided to close it. As well as living in the tower, he also used the space inside the church as a craft centre but recently decided to turn it back into a house of worship.
Martin Palmer is the Secretary General of the Alliance of Religions and Conservation and Director of the International Consultancy on Religion, Education and Culture
LORD ANDREW MAWSON
Lord Mawson arrived in Bromley by Bow 25 years ago as a young minister to find just a dozen people sitting in the pews and with only £400 in the bank. He started to set up projects and businesses in the church, including a dance school, a nursery and an art gallery, open to people from all backgrounds.
REVD. HELEN MATTHEWS
Rev Helen Matthews is the Minister of Bromley by Bow United Reformed Church, part of the Bromley by Bow Centre which is an innovative community organisation in East London.
Sharon first came to the Bromley by Bow Centre 14 years ago and started to help out at "Working Wonders", an art class for adults with learning difficulties, physical or mental health problems. She is now the Assistant Manager of the project.
