ROUGH SCIENCE is a UK factual television series made by the BBC in collaboration with the Open University and has, as of 2007, had six series. It is broadcast in prime time on BBC Two and is considered something of a "break-out hit" for the Open University.

The series' formula consists of a group of four or five scientists, with specialities in different fields, who are given tasks which they must complete, using the natural resources of the surrounding area together with a small set of supplies. Each programme features a different set of tasks, and follows the scientists as they use their knowledge and ingenuity in attempting to fulfill them, and in the process educate the viewing public - despite temporary setbacks being common.

The episodes require the team to either work together in smaller groups to fulfill requirements for the overall challenge, to work in small groups to fulfil vaguely related challenges, or to complete the same task in competition with one another. The programme has been set in a different scenic location each series, typically somewhere with plenty of plants for use by the group. The presenter is Kate Humble, who is accompanied by a group of scientists, some of whom appear in several of the series.

This series took place on the Caribbean island of Carriacou and featured five scientists
Mike Leahy - virologist
Mike Bullivant - organic photochemist
Jonathan Hare - chemist, physicist, inventor and teacher
Kathy Sykes - a science communicator and physicist
Ellen McCallie - an ecologist and teacher

Season 2 Episode 1 - All Mapped Out
Kate Humble and the team of five scientists take up the challenge of charting the sights and sounds of their tropical island. Starting from scratch, they must make an accurate scale map, botanical paper and inks, and a sound-recording device. While a very good head for math and plenty of versatile local plants get them started, impassable mangrove swamps and tropical downpours soon seem intent on scuttling their plans.

Season 2 Episode 2 - Bugs and Barometers:
The team has to pit their wits against nature - and bugs- in the latest challenge. Can they get a biology lab (to make and test antibacterial cream), microscope and weather station (barometer, hygrometer, anemometer) built and tested on their tropical island? With only a basic toolkit to work with, the island's plants and seaweed have to be employed- and with nothing but clear skies weather forecasting can still be a little problematic.

Season 2 Episode 3 - Time and Transmitters:
The scientists find they have to borrow some wartime tricks when challenged with building a transmitter and radio -but will they be able to communicate across their tropical island base? There's also an accurate portable clock and a botanical kite to design, and, once again, the island's natural plants and resources get the scientists thoughts running in strange new directions.

Season 2 Episode 4 - Feel the Heat:
The challenges don't come much tougher than this as the team of scientists tackles the task of lowering the temperature on their sweltering tropical island base. The chemistry of cooling paradoxically seems to involve heating things up first. With just three days to complete the task of making ice, as well as producing working thermometers and sunscreen, their patience is soon simmering.

Season 2 Episode 5 - Sun and Sea
The challenge of building an underwater light to examine the marine life around their island finds the team grappling with natural power sources. The scientists
find the energy of the sea and sun needs a little help from human elbow grease to generate electricity to charge up a battery.

Series 2 Episode 6 - The Science of Celebration
The science of sound and rockets helps Kate Humble and the team devise ways of going out with a bang in the last set of challenges on their Caribbean island. Tasked with creating a concert and spectacle to light up the Caribbean night sky, the scientists find they are struggling to find harmony, while their fireworks are more heat than light. Can they turn it around?
