If you already have these files and would like to help seed, place them in a folder named Rough Science Series 1 and read the instructions in I have the single episodes, can I seed on them now?

ROUGH SCIENCE is a UK factual television series made by the BBC in collaboration with the Open University and has, as of 2007, had six series. It is broadcast in prime time on BBC Two and is considered something of a "break-out hit" for the Open University.

The series' formula consists of a group of four or five scientists, with specialities in different fields, who are given tasks which they must complete, using the natural resources of the surrounding area together with a small set of supplies. Each programme features a different set of tasks, and follows the scientists as they use their knowledge and ingenuity in attempting to fulfill them, and in the process educate the viewing public - despite temporary setbacks being common.

The episodes require the team to either work together in smaller groups to fulfill requirements for the overall challenge, to work in small groups to fulfil vaguely related challenges, or to complete the same task in competition with one another. The programme has been set in a different scenic location each series, typically somewhere with plenty of plants for use by the group. The presenter is Kate Humble, who is accompanied by a group of scientists, some of whom appear in several of the series.

Season 1

Set on a Mediterranean island it featured four episodes, and hence tasks.
1. Discover the longitude and latitude of the island, create a radio from a saucepan and create an insect repellent.
2. Create a camera with film, create a compass and dye a flag.
3. The group are taken to a disused prison on the island where they have to generate power and build a pharmacy (creating antiseptic using olives and myrtle and anti-flatulent with fennel seeds).
4. The final episode involves the creation of soap and toothpaste though the general task is to put food on the table.

The scientists featured were:
Vanessa Griffiths - a marine biologist who teaches ecology for The Field Studies Council at Orielton Field Centre in Pembrokeshire .
Jonathan Hare - chemist, physicist, inventor and teacher.
Mike Leahy - virologist
Mike Bullivant - organic photochemist
Anna Lewington - an ethnobotanist and an economic botanist, researching how people, and groups of people, use plants and how this is important to the societies in which they live .

Season 1 Episode 1 - Mediterranean Mystery:
Swapping their high-tech labs for a disused prison, the five scientists are ferried to a mystery Mediterranean island where they must pool their collective wits. Can they work out their exact latitude and longitude, manufacture an insect repellent from scratch, and improvise a radio from an old saucepan?

Season 1 Episode 2 - Simmering Shutterbugs:
Our scientists have worked out where they are on the globe, but can they now master a series of science-based challenges using just the natural resources of the island? Can they improvise a low-tech camera and film, make a compass to get their bearings, and dye a flag? Seawater, seaweed and urine prove to be indispensable ingredients, but things don't quite go to plan.

Season 1 Episode 3 - Power Supplies
Jonathan Hare and Mike Leahy go head to head in a race to generate power, while Mike Bullivant and Anna Lewington set about building a pharmacy. They extract and dispense a string of natural remedies including an antiseptic made from myrtle and olives, and an anti-flatulent from fennel seeds (to combat one of Mike Leahy’s less appealing habits!)

Note:

This is a VHS cap of aired material from KSPS PBS. Missing portions were spliced with material from Discovery Channel to restore material removed by the broadcasters to the extent available to me. A few minutes might still be missing.

I hope, a member will be able to cap a better and more complete version one day, but hope it will be enjoyable to those that couldn't find a cap so far.

Season 1 Episode 4 - Sustenance
For the last programme of the series, the Rough Scientists face the ultimate challenge - can they use their science skills to put food on the table? Mike Bullivant has an epic struggle to make soap, while Vanessa Griffiths improvises toothpaste from seaweed, seashells and mint.
