Set amongst the picturesque surroundings of rural southern Ireland and centred on the colourful world of horse-racing, BBC One's new family drama Rough Diamond comes galloping onto our screens.

Starring Conor Mullen, Lorraine Pilkington and Stanley Townsend, alongside 17-year-old newcomers Ben Davies and Muireann Bird, the six-part series is filmed entirely on location in Ireland and is written by Robert Jones (Ahead Of The Class).

Best described as Ballykissangel for the noughties, Rough Diamond is the story of Aidan Doherty, a man down on his luck who gains a son, and a horse who turns out to be a real Rough Diamond - by name and by nature.

David meets Goliath when brilliant, but bankrupt, young trainer Aidan finds himself up against Charlie Carrick, his millionaire neighbour and owner of Firebrand stables.

All ready to sell up and start a new life on the other side of the world in Australia, Aidan is just about to sign his late father's stables over to rival Carrick when a highly strung horse and a young man named Jonah arrive, turning his life upside down. Aidan's suddenly got a son he never knew existed - and a crazy colt that could reinvigorate his desire to train.

And so, the adventure begins. Will he take his new life by the reins? Will he sign the stables over to Carrick? And will Carrick's beautiful wife Yolanda threaten to throw a spanner in the works?

Episode Information:

Episode 1
Aidan plans to sell his stables to wealthy neighbour Carrick to assuage his guilt over his father's death. His world is turned upside-down when a young stranger's arrival gives him two reasons to find new direction and vigour - a son Aidan never knew existed and a colt that could give him back his desire to train.

Episode 2
Carrick arrives at the stables with a Turf Club inspector, only for Aidan to discover he needs five horses to keep his trainer's licence, and therefore has to find another three thoroughbreds by the end of the day. He tries to strike up a deal with Moira, while Yolanda worries whether the trainer is struggling to bond with his son.

Episode 3
Jonah goes against his father's wishes and rides his colt without supervision, forcing Aidan to consider sending his son back to the UK. Carrick's stallion fails to perform, prompting him to call on his rival's expertise - which comes at a big price.

Episode 4
Carrick offers Jonah a full-time job at Firebrand, but the opportunity is threatened when his mother arrives from the UK and reveals he has failed all his GCSEs. Meanwhile, Sheridan becomes the apple of her parents' eyes for scoring five A grades in her exams, but still insists she wants to be a jockey.

Episode 5
Yolanda receives an unexpected anniversary present from Carrick, but ends up spending more time with Aidan than with her own husband. Jonah goes against Dermot's orders, pitting Blagger and the colt against each other, which clearly riles both horses.

Episode 6
The two rivals enter their star horses in the race at the Curragh. The stakes are high for Aidan, who needs the money to save Moira's business, but with his jockey injured and a replacement urgently required, he must put his faith in Sheridan's abilities.
