Sorry for not posting all the info the first time around, it's my first posting. Anyway, this is the BBC series "Nanny," created by and starring Wendy Craig, who plays the nanny Barbara Gray. The first season is set in the 30's but later seasons reach into the war years. The synopsis from the back of the DVD cover:

When Barbara Gray leaves the divorce court she enters a world emerging from the first world war. She has no money and no job, just an iron will and a love for children. This is the story of her struggle to face society's prejudice against a divorcee and come to terms with a new, different life.
