Release Notes:

It's a curious thing to be able to consider a record and see immediately its
influence. Usually you'd have to bear with it, let the more obvious reference
points not cloud your judgement immediately and then, hopefully, something a
little more rewarding will come up and bounce in your face like the gabba
influence in A Weekend In The City. (No-one? No? Me neither, that was bullshit.)
But Mancunian acid-folk (someone needs to invent a new term for that) baby-relic
Neil Burrell's debut record. The label it's released on, Akoustik Anarakhy, has
a god-awful name and, in my experience, is just god-awful. The only encounter
I've had with it was an AA-promoted show that had, as supports, a twat and a
Stars In Their Eyes version of Razorlight (the evening was saved heroically by
the much-missed Finlay, one of the finest live bands to ever have their career
thwarted by the expensive demise of Mariah Carey – true story). But that's all
forgiven, because Neil Burrell's White Devils Day Is Almost Over is fairly close
to excellent.

But the influence thing, right, is a tricky one with Neil Burrell. His
influences are so, so blatant. Gong, Nick Drake, anything recorded inside a
baked beans tin and the acoustic moments of Acid Mothers Temple should all
probably be mentioned in the thank-yous. Contrarily, there is something so
smacking of non-linear thought and secretly pop undertones that nibbles slowly,
impressing upon the listener the notion that this man is remarkably different.
The stream of consciousness that dribbles out somewhat maniacally on 'Oompa
Zompa' is entertainingly hare-brained, but the realisations he points to are
rooted defiantly in the real world. Though the fantasist in Burrell is very
clear, it is worthwhile to listen carefully to the tale of real wrongs he wishes
to right.

But the influence thing, right, comes back again to slap potential listeners.
Burrell's musical life-raft sank with the death of the 1970s, but the intricacy
and cleverness of his shocking explosions of wit and freeform acoustic
progression cannot be ignored. Does the fact that this music is very
fresh-sounding because of the absence in the popular marketplace make a
difference? Well, yes, it sort of has to. But you shouldn't .
