Most Haunted Live - Pirates' Curse Day 3 (7th May 2007)

The Most Haunted Team travel to Bristol for a three-night live investigation intending to uncover the ghostly history of the pirates that once frequented its coastline and the slavery imposed by them.

The third and final night of the team's investigation in Bristol. Tonight the team explore the Llandoger Trow, a 17th Century public house which is reputed to have underground passages for smugglers and has links to Robinson Crusoe.

Historical Background from the Most Haunted Wesbiste

Bristol Waterfront

Bristol has been home to a lively port for at least 1000 years. The first settlers to the area traded timber and fabrics with their Irish neighbours. As trade flourished and demand grew, the port was expanded in the 13th Century. By the 14th century the city was trading with several countries including Spain, Portugal and Iceland. Ships also left Bristol to found new colonies in the New World.

In the eighteenth century, Bristol was ideally located to trade with the West Indian and American colonies in slavery and tobacco. These prosperous, financially attractive trade routes soon came to the attention of pirates, ensuring that Bristol became a prime locale in the golden age of piracy.

Legendary pirates and privateers, such as Blackbeard (allegedly a Bristolian) and Bartholomew Roberts had links to the city and many piratical legends have been formed in Bristol’s harbour-side inns and taverns. Queen’s Square, The Custom’s House and many other buildings in the port area are thought to have piracy connections and many of the structures around the harbour are said to have been funded by maritime crime.

The area was also important in piracy’s demise. Woodes Rogers, a former privateer and Bristol native became Governor in Chief over the Bahama Islands where he successfully suppressed pirates and privateers. Bristol's prosperity as a port began to fade during the 19th Century. New larger merchant ships couldn’t cope with The Avon's extreme tides. Isambard Kingdom Brunel helped shape Bristol’s redevelopment with his Clifton Suspension Bridge and the SS Great Britain and herald a new period of economic growth.

Bristol’s Waterfront area was completely redeveloped over the last few decades and is now a bustling shopping and entertainment district.

Blackbeard and Bristol’s Pirate Legacy

Bristol's prosperous trade routes and ship faring links always attracted the criminal element and included some of history's shadier characters, such as legendary Blackbeard aka Edward Teach. Considered the most fearsome and bloodthirsty pirate during the maritime crime’s golden age, Blackbeard was thought to be born in Bristol. A huge man with a beard that almost covered his face, he would strike terror into the hearts of his victims, by weaving wicks laced with gunpowder into his hair, and lighting them during battle.

Despite his reputation, his career in piracy was relatively short. He began around 1713 as a crewman aboard a sloop commanded by the pirate Benjamin Hornigold. Three years later Hornigold appointed Teach to as captain of a captured vessel, which he renamed Queen Anne's Revenge and soon the two of them, working in tandem, were among the most feared pirates of their day. By 1718, Blackbeard commanded four vessels and over 300 pirates. But his notoriety became his undoing and he was eventually tracked down by the Royal Navy and killed in a brief but bloody battle on 22 November 1718.

Other pirates with Bristolian links include Bartholomew Roberts, who became the most successful pirate in history capturing 456 vessels in four years. James Skrym joined his crew in 1720 and soon commanded his own ship, before being caught and hanged two years later. Woodes Rogers, a famous privateer, was born in Bristol in 1679, eventually becoming the Bahama Islands’ Governor in Chief and the scourge of pirates everywhere.

Fictional pirates have also been inspired by Bristol. The marooned Alexander Selkirk was rescued by the same Woodes Rogers and taken back to Bristol where he allegedly met author Daniel Defoe in a local pub. Selkirk later became the inspiration for the character Robinson Crusoe, while the character Benn Gunn in Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island' was also based on Selkirk.
