How We Used to Live
How We Used to Live was an award winning British historical television drama made for schools by Yorkshire Television.

Expansion, Trade and Industry
From as Early as Elizabethan times European trade around the globe began to expand.
As the great explorers discovered new countries, continents and products the merchants were never far behind.
Gradually a trade triangle developed in the Atlantic between Europe, Africa and America.
British merchants would send their ships to West Africa loaded with textiles, iron goods and guns.
They sold these goods and in exchange bought slaves to work in the plantations in the West Indies.
After this middle passage when the captains had sold their human cargo.
They loaded with sugar, cotton and spices and returned to the growing ports of Glasgow, Bristol, London and Liverpool.
As the ships never travelled empty this system was very efficient - but it depended on slavery.
