Michael Portillo thinks of himself as a personable chap who has no propensity for violence and has never been involved in a fight. But, he asks in this diverting voyage of discovery, could he be goaded into lashing out, either by some twisting of his personality or through extreme circumstances? We're not giving anything away if we say, "No, he couldn't," because Portillo remains a nice bloke throughout. You wouldn't really expect him to give someone a good kicking, would you? What Portillo does is state, or ask, the obvious, such as, "Could a violence addiction turn you into a criminal?" Well, yes, I should think so. And an awful lot of the programme is taken up by a re-creation of the Milgram study of obedience to authority, where participants think they are administering deadly electric shocks to a stranger. What's truly stunning here is that Horizon could find 12 volunteers who'd never heard of this infamous landmark in social psychology.
