An award winning documentary series, first broadcast in the spring of 1994, documents some of the more quirky aspects of relationship between the British public and their cars.

This, the final episode in the series, looks at family motoring, complete with day-trips, children's car games, squabbles and sing-alongs. Achieving consensus within the family over which car to buy has never been more difficult, with children as young as five now volunteering their expert advice.

What is most intresting nowadays about this episode is how thw views expressed about a particular type of car and what it means and says to own one seem so dated. I think that this must be the Clarkson effect, after all these days no one but no one would ever dream about singing the praises of a Renault Espace or a Suzuki Vitara. But they do here in pre Hamster, James and Clarkson Top Gear days.

This series was novel in its day because it was filmed and broadcast in a 16:9 widescreen format. However in 1994 no one had a wide screen telly as they hadn't been invented yet. So what the broadcasters did was to letterbox the picture, and so on your regular 4:3 telly you'd have the picture across the middle and black space top and bottom. All well and good, and it produces a modern and edgy look to the show.

Fast forward 15 years to today, and all broadcasts are now made in widescreen. But that's a bit of a problem when you're hanging on to a 4:3 tape such as this one. The solution is letterbox the other way around: broadcast the show with black bars to the left and right.

This is a big problem for this show because it's already got letterboxing to the top and bottom. And hence has gone from looking all cool and edgy to frankly a bit daft with a little image in the middle of a sea of black space.

You wouldn't believe the fun and games I had editing out all of this useless black space. Below you can see a before and after screenshot!
