John Craven heads to Slimbridge in Gloucestershire to mark the centenary of the birth of naturalist and conservationist Sir Peter Scott, and Miriam O'Reilly gives a helping hand to the Wiltshire Fire Service as they demonstrate an improved technique for rescuing large animals from ditches and mud.

The students from the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester take part in the annual tractor pull, and could our food supply be jeopardised by a chronic shortage of food scientists?

SLIMBRIDGE

John Craven explores the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve at Slimbridge. The trust was founded by Sir Peter Scott - often described as the ‘father of conservation.’ He established a collection of captive birds and created a secure landscape which attracts wild migrating birds in winter and summer.

John discovers how Bewick Swans can be identified from patterns on their bills and learns about their journey from Slimbridge to Arctic Russia - where they breed in the spring.

PURTON HULKS

On the banks of the River Severn at Purton lie the remains of more than 80 ships. They were grounded there to prevent the collapse of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, which runs along the side of the river. John explores these intriguing historic remains and hears the stories behind them from maritime historian Paul Barnett.

FOOD SKILLS SHORTAGE

Debate over the journey our food takes from field to fork tends to focus on farms and supermarkets, with little emphasis on the processing in between. This lack of attention may be one reason why food science is often overlooked by young people when choosing careers. A severe skills shortage has developed and employers are now finding it difficult to fill vacancies, which is threatening British food manufacturing. Charlotte Smith reports on efforts to make the food industry taste sweeter to school leavers.

LARGE ANIMAL RESCUE

Animal rescue operations are often difficult and dangerous, both for the distressed animal and the fire fighters involved. Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service have had around 50 call-outs in the past year to large animals in distress. Two of their stations have now become animal rescue centres. To make their job safer and quicker, the crews have begun training using new methods and equipment. Miriam O’Reilly caught up with the fire fighters on a training day.

HOGS' HAVEN

Stewart McDonald and his wife Hilary started Hogs’ Haven about 15 years ago. They care for ill and injured hedgehogs and whenever possible they return them to the wild. The McDonalds tell us about how rewarding they find the job and how much hard work it is.

ROYAL AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE

The Royal Agricultural College near Cirencester trains students in agriculture, equine studies and land management and we’ve been following the students’ progress over recent months. This week, we drop in on Rag Week, learn some basic butchery techniques and find out how to ride a quad bike.

WELSH COAST PATH PART 1

Michaela Strachan walks the Ceredigion Coast Path in west Wales. The route is the latest stretch of coastline to be opened up to walkers as part of the plan to link all 800 miles of Welsh coastline by a continuous footpath. It’s a spectacular walk which takes in the stunning countryside which inspired Dylan Thomas.
