Julia Bradbury and Matt Baker find out how the Malvern Hills, which straddle the border of Herefordshire and Worcestershire and are often described as a 'mountain range in miniature', have made their mark on the world stage. Water from the area is drunk by people all over the globe, the landscape provided the inspiration for internationally-renowned composer Sir Edward Elgar and the nearby village of Colwall is the birthplace of women's cricket.
John Craven heads to Norway to find out what lessons the UK could learn about sustainable fishing, Adam Henson searches for a new outlet for his rare breed pigs, and Jules Hudson attempts to navigate through the countryside using only nature. Plus the UK's largest ornamental duck breeder on why he's found his dream job.
CONSERVATORS
This year marks the 125th anniversary of the Malvern Conservators, who help manage the dramatic landscape that surrounds the area. Spring is a particularly busy time of year for the team, so Matt and Julia are rolling up their sleeves to lend a hand. Matt’s turning the sheep out after lambing and Julia’s in the woods, finding out more about some of the Malvern's bird life.
MALVERN
We visit the town of Malvern, to sample its world famous water, renowned for its purity. It comes from the hundreds of springs that surround the town. Some of them, have recently been restored, so we'll be looking at a few of the most beautiful examples. And to get a taste of what Malvern's most famous product, Matt goes back in time and experiences the famous Victorian water treatment.
COLWALL
Last month, England’s Women’s Cricket Team claimed glory in the World Cup - and we visit Colwall, the birth place of the Women’s Cricket Association. Julia joins Isa Guha, from the victorious team, to see if they can continue Colwall’s legacy and convince some of local girls to take up the game.
ELGAR
The Malverns, have long been inspiration for artists. Perhaps, most notable example is the composer Elgar, who was born nearby and spent most of his life there. Julia finds out how the self-taught composer rose through the musical ranks to become one of the most renowned musical figures of his time -- and she visits the landscapes that are thought to have inspired his work.
FISHING
The European Union announced last week that it was time for fishermen to stop throwing thousands of tonnes of dead fish back in the sea, just so they can stay within their quotas. Now it has to find a way to bring an end to this decades-long practice without endangering fish stocks.
John Craven travels to Norway, a country which believes it has a solution -- and he takes one of our inshore fishermen to see whether we can learn from the country recognised as having the best sustainable fishing policy in the world.
ADAM’S FARM
Every Sunday Countryfile finds out about real life on the land, with Adam Henson on his Cotswolds family farm. This week, he’s been to visit Robert, his local butcher, in the hope that he’ll be able to sell pork from the farm. Meanwhile, spring brings new life with the arrival of ten piglets.
DUCK DEALER
We visit Bas Clarke, the UK's largest ornamental duck breeder, who sells his beautiful birds as pets. His passion for the animal began in childhood, and fifteen years ago he gave up his trade as a stonemason to pursue his lifetime ambition. Bas runs a high-tech breeding system complete with a beautiful 2 acre lake -- the perfect home for his feathered friends. Bas tells Countryfile why he takes such pleasure from the birds.
NATURAL NAVIGATION
And finally, Jules Hudson gets a lesson in natural navigation. A long forgotten technique, that uses clues in the landscape -- rather than maps and technology. He puts his new found skills to the test, but will he find his way home?
