Frederic Chopin
Etude in E flat major
Opus 10, Number 11

Originally broadcast in 2003, in the late evening on BBC2

In 2002, BBC Wales filmed up-and-coming professional pianists describing and then playing their choice of piece
from J. S. Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues. These were intended as five-minute filler programmes on BBC2,
before the Open University programmes started at 12:30am.

I recorded them all (on an obsolete video capture card, far below the audio/video quality expected for uploads here),
and can confirm, infuriatingly, that not all the 48 Preludes and Fugues were filmed for that series.

The following year (2003), BBC Wales did something similar with Chopin's Etudes. These are 24 pieces in two
publications, plus another three that were published posthumously. Although they are often performed in a recital,
they are technical pieces that also function as finger exercises. This means they are taxing to play.

This Etude, played by Freddy Kempf, consists of wide broken chords, extending far beyond a human hand-span,
that can only be played as arpeggios in each hand.

This one session was rebroadcast on Friday 10 April 2009 at 7:00pm on BBC Four, immediately preceding the
Easter broadcast of The Creation by Haydn at the Barbican (download it here).
