The line between an intrepid adventurer and a total nutter is already a thin one, and Bear Grylls has carved out a successful career by stretching it still farther.

In this feature length documentary, he and his young engineering maestro friend - the luxuriously named Gilo Cardozo - head off to the Himalayas in an attempt to break the world’s paramatoring record. With propellers strapped to their backs and parachutes above them, their aim is to fly as high as Everest.

The physical and technical demands of this venture are daunting. It takes 18 months of non-stop planning and development, much of it by Gilo - an engineer with a posh voice and the cosy look of a hobbit, who makes these bizarre flying machines at his home in Wiltshire - oh, and a near-death experience before they even reach the foothills of the Himalayas. Nobody has reached anywhere near that altitude in a paramator before. No one would say it was a sensible thing to attempt, but it is enthralling to watch the pair of them have a bash at it.
