One of BBC Television's most popular comedy drama series for many years, All Creatures Great And Small was based on the novels of James Herriot. Starting in 1936 and ending some time in the early 1950s, the stories chronicle the lives of the vets in a small practice in the Yorkshire Dales. The main characters are

Christopher Timothy ... James Herriot (89 episodes, 1978-1990)
Robert Hardy ... Siegfried Farnon (89 episodes, 1978-1990)
Peter Davison ... Tristan Farnon (64 episodes, 1978-1990)
Lynda Bellingham ... Helen Herriot (46 episodes, 1988-1990)

Carol Drinkwater ... Helen / ... (37 episodes, 1978-1985)


Series 4 is the first of the postwar period. James and Siegfried are back from the war. Tristan is holding a position in the ministery of agriculture and fisheries.

Helen Herriot (Carol Drinkwater in series 1-3) is replaced by Linda Bellingham from series 4 upward.

Video quality has dramatically improved in comparison to the earlier series.
Format is still 4X3.

Episode 1 (17 JAN 88)
One Of Nature's Little Miracles
Siegfried has to deal with some sick turkeys. James tries to get a bank loan, joins the Milk Sub-Committee and pays a visit to Tricki Woo. Another vet claims that Siegfried is stealing his clients. Calum Buchanan joins the practice, complete with tame badger.

Episode 2 (24 JAN 88)
Barks And Bites
Siegfried treats a pair of spoiled dogs. Tristan becomes a Fertility Advisor for the Minister of Agriculture. James has to check some sheep which are being exported to Russia. Calum begins to find his feet.

Episode 3 (31 JAN 88)
The Bull With The Bowler Hat
Tristan begins work as a Fertility Advisor. Siegfried thinks that Calum is introducing too much wildlife into Skeldale House. James tries unsuccessfully to save a sick cow.

Episode 4 (7 FEB 88)
The Pig Man Cometh
James and Helen are looking for a new, bigger home. James helps Lionel Brough with his new piggery. Calum's Dobermans cause problems at Skeldale House. Siegfried thinks about buying a horse.

Episode 5 (14 FEB 88)
Hail Caesar!
The vets have to deal with an outbreak of fleas. They're busy preparing for a bank holiday event intended to raise money for a new church roof. James tries to perform a caesarean section on a cow.

Episode 6 (21 FEB 88)
Only One Woof
Siegfried deals with Gyp, a sheepdog who never barks. James has problems with miserly Mr Biggins. Tristan becomes an overnight expert on goats in an effort to impress a beautiful young married woman.

Episode 7 (28 FEB 88)
Ace, King, Queen, Jack
James deals with a sick cow, an injured dog and a box full of kittens. Siegfried investigates a suspected case of foot and mouth disease. Calum is puzzled by a sick dachshund.

Episode 8 (6 MAR 88)
The Healing Touch
James has to treat a cat with a shattered jaw. He calls on Granville Bennett to help. Granville offers him a share of his paractice. Siegfried gives Calum a lesson in economising.

Episode 9 (13 MAR 88)
City Slicker
James is still thinking over Granville Bennett's offer of a share in his practice. An old friend, who's thinking about taking up farming, pays a visit. James and Siegfried give him a lesson in the realities of a farmer's life.

Episode 10 (20 MAR 88)
For Richer, For Poorer
Siegfried has a bad day. Calum gets trapped in a tree by a bull, so he misses a train. James comes to a decision about Granville Bennett's offer.
