3 Minute Wonder - What is Freedom?

Monday, 30th March to Thursday, 2nd April
7:55pm to 8pm
Channel4

What does it mean to be free? Politicians talk about freedom all the time. Both the left and the right try to claim it as their own. But what does it mean to ordinary people? Filmmaker James Price travels to America, the self-styled Land of the Free, on a journey through this most nebulous of concepts, asking the simple question "who is the freest person you know?"

01 - Money Talks
Is freedom not having to worry about money? Crystal, the manager of a car rental firm in the wild hinterlands of New York State, who's convinced that "freedom is money, that's what it is in a nutshell". When asked her the freest person she knows is, she points to Corky, a retired cop who just seems to work for her for fun, he's got all the cash he needs. But Corky has other ideas about what it means to be Free.

02 - Doing This
Is freedom being able to do what you enjoy most in life? Randall is a workshop technician at a university in upstate New York, but lives for hunting deer and turkey in the forested rolling hills of the state. That's when he feels free, taking part in an activity that brings him closer to nature.

03 - A Constant Struggle
Is freedom defined by your political rights? Henry was a young lecturer at Kent State University, Ohio in 1970 when he witnessed an anti-Vietnam protest go horribly wrong on campus. Four of his students were killed by their own country's troops as the state government sent in the National Guard to break up the protests. As such Henry has a strong sense of the vulnerability of "Freedom", and recognises its defense is a constant struggle.

Claudia, a young pianist and student of music in Portland, Maine, has another story of political freedom to tell. She moved from Eastern Europe to the USA as a teenager, and tells us her memories of another student protest, far away in Romania, which led to the downfall of Ceausescu's dictatorial brand of Communism. Claudia asks how far we should look to political systems to give us "Freedom".

04 - A State of Mind
Is freedom something that you find within yourself? Michelle has found her kind of freedom by pushing her body and mind to the limits. She competes in the Ironman triathalons. These are some of the most gruelling competitions on Earth - a 2.4 mile swim, immediately followed by a 112 mile cycle ride, immediately followed by a full 26.2 mile marathon run. When asked who is the freest person she knows, she points in a surprising direction - to Jon, a 49 year old man with downs syndrome. What is it about Jon that makes him free? And who will Jon choose as the freest person he knows?
