Rome, October 11th 1997; the return fixture between Italy and England to decide who would top the group and qualify automatically for France 98. Dubbed ‘Judgement Day’ by the English press, England topped the group by 1 point over second placed Italy and needed just a draw while Italy needed the win. The danger for England was the injury to captain Alan Shearer while Italy had the remarkable triple strike force of Fillipo Inzhagi, Gianfranco Zola and Christian Vieri. England were looking for goals from the evergreen Teddy Sheringham and the dynamic Ian Wright and had a very creative midfield with the mercurial Gazza and a very young David Beckham. The game also features another of those iconic England moments when, very much in the Terry Butcher mould, Paul Ince receives stitches for a head wound and plays on with a blood soaked shirt.

The occasion was marred by crowd trouble before and during the game as Italian police were rather heavy-handed with the travelling English fans, such was the tension in the stadium. The tension spread to the pitch as automatic qualification was at stake, neither team wanting to face the danger of a qualification play-off. It was a fiercely fought game in a tense and thrilling atmosphere.
