About Command & Conquer(part one): Tiberian Dawn
The first installment of the series was released world-wide on August 31, 1995 and was simply named Command & Conquer, although fans often refer to it as Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn or just Tiberian Dawn to also avoid confusion between that game and the series as a whole. The series is largely marketed for North American, European and Australasian audiences, with many of the games also translated into other languages including German, French and Chinese. The series is primarily for IBM PC compatible computers, although some of the games have been ported to various video game consoles, and the Apple Macintosh.
The first game in the series, Command & Conquer (known as Tiberian Dawn throughout the C&C community), is one of the first real-time strategy games and its runaway success helped to popularize the genre. Originally released for MS-DOS, a "Gold" version for Windows 95 was released in 1997, along with a similar version for the Mac OS in the same year. An expansion pack, The Covert Operations, was also released, adding no more than a few new missions.
In addition, a version was released for Sega Saturn, PlayStation and Nintendo 64, which contained the Covert Operations missions, as well as a few more missions specially created for the platform, called Special Ops. The version for Nintendo 64 featured 3D graphics instead of sprites. A so-called beta version of the game can be found for Mega Drive/Sega Genesis on the internet[citation needed], but it is not known whether this was ever sold, or simply leaked.
The game is one of the first to be released on two CDs instead of just one. This allowed multiplayer games between two computers to be played with a single copy.
