'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.

[Juliet, from Shakespeare's ROMEO AND JULIET, 1594]

Today you get "By Any Other Name" - Remastered, just transmitted to me from my source in Sector 001!

THE ENHANCEMENTS

We get a new digital class-M planet, some new enhanced shots of the Enterprise breaking through the galactic barrier (similar to "Where No Man Has Gone Before", but this time with the "production" version of the Enterprise, as opposed to the "pilot" version in WNMHGB!), a new version of the Andromeda galaxy, and several shots of the Enterprise hurtling through space, including a very nice closing shot at the end, with the Enterprise returning to our galaxy, leaving behind Andromeda. On top of that, CBS Digital took the time to create again a rather spectacular new digital "matte painting" of the planet surface with the crew beaming down at the very beginning (quite like in "Spock's Brain").
(You can find a very well written, detailed review of the new effects by Jeff Bond on

ASSORTED COMMENTS

This episode was directed by trek veteran Marc Daniels, and the script was written by Jerome Bixby and D.C. Fontana (story by Jerome Bixby, who also wrote the fabulous "Mirror, Mirror"). This is what the two creative minds behind this episode had to say about the genesis of this episode:

First Jerome Bixby, who admitted: "I made the mistake of not paying attention to the format, the poop sheet saying 'this is what we want, this is what we don't want, avoid these, these are the staples. New writers tend to be, particularly when writing stories about the cosmos at large, overwhelmed by the immensity of it all, and don't fall into this trap.' Well, I fell into it head over heels. I was doing a story about the Enterprise being hijacked to the Andromeda Nebula. At best - at hyper-c velocities - a 300 year voyage, so Kirk and the others are facing the end of their existence as they had known it. They are totally the prisoners of these great, powerful entities. Creatures from Andromeda want to take over our galaxy, because radiation levels there are making existence impossible for them. And I went off into a, I guess, 60 page essay on how lonely it is to be in that boat. I was told that it was very good, but it wouldn't make a STAR TREK. And so I didn't know how far I was off the beam until I began to see revised pages. I didn't work with Dorothy; she rewrote my script. Primarily, she interjected the humor and the conflict into the episode."

Dorothy Fontana said: "I don't even recall what my contribution to it was, but it was enough to get me a split credit. I seem to recall that it was an effort to involve the characters - the STAR TREK characters - more. The initial concept was good, but there wasn't enough involvement of our people. The one thing I definitely put in was Scotty's drinking contest. I love that. It's one of my favorite scenes that I've written."

There's nothing to add, except "It's green!" Cheers!

Okay, then, that's all for today, except to remind you to keep seeding after download, or I will take an enhanced shuttlecraft, break through the galactic barrier and visit the Andromeda Galaxy - remember, it's a 300 year trip, so I won't be back for at least 600 years, and by then, no one will care anymore for trek remastered (there will probably be around some much better trek versions with holographic effects, so it wouldn't matter anyway if I return at all!)

Next week: Well, ladies and gentlemen, I won't be online next week... as a matter of fact, I'll be off-line for the second half of March, taking again a well-earned two week leave! When I return from my trip (first week of April), I'll be back online, of course, with all the remastered episodes I can get for you, including the following episodes:

- "That Which Survives"
- "Is There In Truth No Beauty?"
- "Elaan of Troyius"

All right, people, take care, and

LIVE LONG AND PROSPER!!!

Best regards,
Captain Soundtrekker
