Even though the Destrons have been driven off Earth, a small team of Cybertron Pretenders have remained behind, just in case. Led by Metalhawk ("Hawk" in his human identity), the Pretenders live among the humans, using their Pretender shells to assume human size and appearance. The Cybertrons' caution is rewarded: Destron Pretenders soon appear, led by a mysterious force called Devil Z. The Cybertrons and Destrons soon build up their forces, recruiting humans to become Junior Headmasters and Godmasters (Powermasters)

Questa serie è stata trasmessa in Italia nel 1991 col nome di Pretenders e vediamo l'introduzione delle versioni giapponesi dei Pretenders Cybertrons (guidati da Metalhawk), dei Powermasters (Godmasters), degli Headmasters juniors; gli autorobots si chiameranno Cybertrons mentre i Distructors si chiameranno Destrons. Il protagonista, che come quasi tutti gli altri di questa serie è un umano, ha il potere tramite dei bracciali di unirsi al corpo inerte di un robot identico a Commander delle prime due stagioni, ma che in realtà non è il Commander che conoscevamo, ma un clone robotico, che, nella versione originale si chiama "Ginrai" (prende il nome dalla sua controparte umana che gli da vita unendosi a lui: infatti Ginrai è in grado di trasformarsi sempre tramite i bracciali, nel motore di Ginrai Robot e quindi di diventare lui il vero robot.

Sebbene i Destrons siano stati eliminati sulla Terra, una piccola squadra di Pretenders Cybertron (Cybertron sta per Autorobots in questa edizione..) è rimasta sulla Terra giusto nel caso in cui qualche Destrons si fosse rifatto vivo.. Condotti da Metalhawk (Hawk nella sua identità umana), i Pretenders vivono tra gli uomini, utilizzando i loro poteri per prendere le sembianze umane e mescolarsi tra gli umani. L'attesa da parte dei Cybertrons è stata ricompensata: I Pretenders Destron appariranno presto, condotti da una forza misteriosa chiamata Devil Z. I Cybertrons ed i Destrons aumentano le loro truppe, reclutando degli uomini per diventare i Junior Headmasters ed i Godmasters (Powermasters).
