La serie si divide in due parti. Nella prima le nostre eroine dovranno fronteggiare gli alieni Ail e An, che per sopravvivere devono fornire
linfa vitale all'albero che li tiene in vita, e questa linfa è l'energia umana. Sconfitti i due alieni comincia la parte più importante dell'anime.
Dal futuro arriva la piccola Chibiusa, figlia futura in Usagi e Mamoru nonché principessa del regno di Crystal Tokyo, di cui ovviamente i due
ragazzi sono i sovrani col nome di Neo Queen Serenity e King Endymion. Tuttavia un gruppo di sovversivi, chiamati "Famiglia della Luna Nera"
e capeggiati dal principe Diamond, in realtà plagiato dal crudele Wiseman vuole rapire Chibiusa e distruggere il pacifico equilibrio di
Neo Queen Serenity per prendere il potere e per farlo vuole rapire la regina prima della sua ascesa al trono. Sailor Moon e compagne dovranno
affrontare la nuova terribile minaccia.

Sailor Moon R is split into two different arcs. During episodes 47-59, space aliens Ail and An, disguised as normal students, arrive on the planet.
During episodes 60-88, Sailor Moon and the senshi fight against the Black Moon family (Rubeus, Dimando, Saphir, Esmeraude, Wiseman, etc.).
We find out that Dimando is in love with Princess Serenity, and he wants her for himself. Chibi-Usa also arrives.
When they arrive to the future, they see that Crystal Tokyo looks like a ghost town. They encounter King Endymion who tells them the legend of the
Black Moon family, and reveals that Chibiusa is in fact the daughter of Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon. Meanwhile, Prince Dimande kidnaps Sailor Moon
due to her resemblance to Neo-Queen Serenity.
