Torrent description

"Who loves ya, baby?"

Television of the 70s could certainly be described, in part at least, as the era of the crime-drama. The landscape of prime time real estate was dotted with such crime fighters as Columbo, McMillan (and Wife,) McCloud, Cannon and Starsky and Hutch, to name but a few. And perhaps one of the most colorful of the bunch, with his perpetual lollipop and gleaming head was Kojak – a no-nonsense, dedicated cop of Greek heritage, patrolling the mean streets of New York City in his own inimitable way.

Spawned from a 1973 made-for-television film called The Marcus-Nelson Murders, the film featured a hardened detective named “Theo Kojack.” The resulting favorable reaction to the character, played by actor Telly Savalas, made a television series inevitable. Kojak arrived the same year and proved to be one of the most successful shows of the genre.

Kojak was unique among his co-workers. Besides his overwhelming fondness for lollipops, the result of quitting his smoking habit, Kojak was a somewhat cynical law enforcement officer, street-savvy and with little regard for the typical police bureaucracy. Kojak took an unorthodox and hardened approach to apprehending criminals, sometimes bending the rules when necessary, but always full of compassion for the victims.

At the 13th Precinct in Manhattan, Kojak worked under the supervision of Chief of Detectives Frank Marsh, a former partner who preferred his subordinates strictly follow the book. While their differing approaches created more than a few conflicts, the two men generally respected each other. While never formally paired with a partner, Kojak frequently worked alongside Detectives Crocker, Rizzo and Stavros (played by Savalas’ real-life brother, George.)

Kojak was a hit almost right out of the starting gate. Between its realistic portrayal of police work and the charismatic lead role portrayed by Savalas, audiences quickly embraced the series and were repeating the detective’s catchphrase, “Who loves ya, baby?” at every opportunity. The show was also a launching pad for many up-and-coming actors over the years including James Woods, Harvey Keitel, John Larroquette, Erik Estrada, Richard Gere and many, many others.

After five years and 118 episodes, Kojak finally ended its run in 1978, but it certainly wasn’t time for Kojak to turn in his badge just yet. CBS would feature the crime fighter in two made-for-television movies – The Belarus File in 1985 and The Price of Justice in 1987. ABC picked up the torch in 1989 and made Kojak a part of their ABC Mystery Movie series, creating 5 two-hour episodes that featured the character as a recently-promoted Inspector, now in charge of the NYPD’s Major Crimes Squad.

Sadly, Telly Savalas passed away in 1994.
