New challenges await Joe Yabuki after leaving the ring following the death of his friend Rikiishi. L’ultima sfida e l’ultimo appuntamento di Joe: al culmine di una carriera difficile ma gloriosa, affrontare la realtà significa accettare la sconfitta, o scegliere di combattere fino alla fine? Il film per le sale ripercorre il momento culminante della serie televisiva omonima, ma è stato interamente ridisegnato ed animato, e vanta la regia del grande Osamu Dezaki.

Nuove sfide attendono Joe Yabuki dopo l'abbandono del ring in seguito alla morte del suo amico Rikiishi. Il ritorno alla boxe lo vede impegnato contro campioni provenienti da tutto il mondo per la conquista del titolo mondiale, ma cosa impedisce a Joe di usare il suo famoso "tiro incrociato" e tornare ad essere il boxeur di un anno prima? Tra gli sfidanti troverà Carlos Rivera un avversario ed un amico, in José Mendoza un fiero lottatore che lo impegnerà in un decisivo, tragico incontro.
