historical fantasy manga series authored by Yuki Urushibara, which was later adapted into an anime and a live-action feature film. The manga has been serialized in Afternoon magazine since 1999 and is ongoing; eight tankobon consisting of the first 40 chapters have been released in Japan.

The anime series, directed by Hiroshi Nagahama and animated by Artland, spanned 26 episodes and completed its television run with the airing of its twentieth episode in March 2006. The final six episodes were released on DVD between May to June 2006.

The series has won numerous awards; in 2003, the manga was awarded an Excellence Prize for manga at the 7th Japan Media Arts Festival, while in 2006, the series won the Kodansha Manga Award for general manga. At the 10th Japan Media Arts Festival, both the anime and manga series were placed among the top 10 in their respective categories for best manga and anime. The anime series won grand prizes in the categories of television series and best art direction (for Takashi Waki) at the 5th Tokyo Anime Award competition held at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in 2006



Mushishi è un manga ancora in corso adattato poi in una serie anime da 26 episodi creato da Yuki Urushibara. L'opera originale ha vinto diversi premi: nel 2003 ha vinto l'Excellence Prize al Japan Media Arts Festival e il premio di Miglior Manga al Kodansha Manga Awards nel 2006. Nel 2006 il registra Katsuhiro Otomo ha presentato il film live action della serie al Festival del cinema di Venezia.
Mushishi è costituito da episodi autoconclusivi in cui di volta in volta il protagonista, il misterioso Ginko, entra in contatto con un diverso caso che coinvolge i Mushi, strane creature che racchiudono in sé la vita. Non proprio insetti o animali, ma comunque esseri viventi. Né buoni né cattivi. La convivenza di questi con l'uomo porta sovente a problematiche che soltanto un Mushishi (cacciatore di Mushi) è in grado d risolvere.
Per via di questa struttura esistono molti personaggi differenti e solo pochi vengono ripresentati nel corso di storie successive. L'unico personaggio cardine è Ginko che porta sulle spalle il peso di una amnesia che nasconde la sua fanciullezza e che vaga per il Giappone in cerca di nuovi casi, senza essere in grado di fermarsi a lungo in un posto per via della sua natura di attirare i Mushi a sé.
